▪How do I plan a data center hardware refresh?
Start with an inventory export: what is installed, its age, warranty status and utilization. Rank equipment by risk — end-of-support dates, failure history, capacity ceilings — then group replacements into waves that match budget cycles and change windows. Quote each wave as a firm bill of materials with lead times attached, and stage the hardware — imaging, racking, labeling — before the maintenance window, so cutover time is spent connecting rather than assembling. A reseller should hand you that plan as reviewable line items, not a bundle.
▪How much UPS runtime does a server rack need?
Enough to ride through the transfer to generator power, or to shut down cleanly if there is no generator — for most racks that is 5 to 15 minutes at actual measured load, not nameplate. Add up everything on the circuit (servers, switches, storage), apply the UPS's own efficiency, and size the battery for runtime at that draw. Oversizing wastes budget; undersizing shows up during the first outage. A load reading from the existing PDU is the single best sizing input.
