About fiber patch cables
Buying a fibre jumper is really four decisions, and only one of them is length. The first is mode, and the transceiver decides it for you: short-reach optics need multimode glass, long-reach optics need single-mode, and a cable of the wrong mode will not link no matter how short the run. The second is grade. Multimode comes as OM3 (aqua), OM4 (aqua or violet) and OM5 (lime): at 10 Gb, OM3 reaches about 300 metres and OM4 about 400; on 40 and 100 Gb parallel optics those figures fall to roughly 100 and 150 metres, which is why OM4 is the safe default in a new build. Single-mode OS2 (yellow) is measured in kilometres and its real limit is the optic's own budget, not the glass. The third decision is the connector pair — LC duplex for almost everything modern, SC on older equipment, and MTP/MPO for parallel optics and breakout — and the fourth is jacket rating, where OFNR riser is the general-purpose choice and OFNP plenum is required in air-handling spaces.
Two things this page is deliberately honest about. Active optical cables are not here: an AOC has its transceivers moulded onto the ends and is its own category on this site, so the fibre scope is patch cords and trunks you plug into your own optics. And the catalog reads media and length from the manufacturer's title — the exact connector pair, the mode and grade, the polarity of an MPO trunk and the jacket rating are on each product page, because those are not values worth guessing at. Lengths appear in feet even where the title printed metres, and the range runs from short intra-rack jumpers to kilometre spools, so the minimum and maximum length filters are the quickest way to get to the jumpers.

- Single-mode or multimode?
- The transceiver decides. Short-reach optics (SR and similar) are built for multimode glass — OM3, OM4 or OM5 — while long-reach optics (LR, LX and up) need single-mode OS2. They are not interchangeable and a mismatched pair will not establish a link, so start from the optics you already own or have specified, then buy the matching jumper.
- OM3, OM4 or OM5?
- For 10 Gb, OM3 reaches roughly 300 metres and OM4 roughly 400. For 40 and 100 Gb parallel optics the reaches drop to about 100 metres on OM3 and 150 on OM4, which is why OM4 is the sensible default for anything new — the extra cost is small next to re-pulling fibre. OM5 adds short-wavelength division multiplexing for specific optics; unless your design calls for it, OM4 is the answer.
- What is MTP/MPO, and do I need it?
- It is a multi-fibre connector — commonly 12 or 24 fibres in one ferrule — used for parallel optics such as 40G-SR4 and 100G-SR4, for high-density trunks between panels, and for breakout cables that fan one high-speed port into several slower ones. If your optics are duplex LC, you do not need it. If they are parallel, you do, and polarity type (A, B or C) has to match the design of the link.
- Riser or plenum jacket?
- OFNR riser is the general-purpose rating for runs inside a room or up a vertical shaft. OFNP plenum is required where cable passes through an air-handling space such as a ceiling void used for return air — that is a code requirement, not a preference. LSZH is specified where smoke toxicity is the concern. The rating for a specific part is on its product page; if the run is plenum, say so with your quote request and we confirm it against the exact SKUs.
