About DDR4 SODIMM laptop memory
A DDR4 SO-DIMM is the 260-pin small-outline module used by laptops, mini PCs, all-in-ones, many small-form-factor desktops and a large share of network appliances and NAS units. It is not interchangeable with anything else on the shelf: the notch sits in a different place on DDR3 and DDR5 SO-DIMMs, the operating voltage is different, and a full-size DIMM will not physically enter the slot. If the system documentation says DDR4 SO-DIMM, that is the only module that will work in it — the capacity, the speed and the error-correction options below are the parts you actually get to choose.
Three things decide which of these modules is the right one. First, the maximum capacity the platform supports per slot and in total: two 16 GB modules and one 32 GB module are not the same purchase, and plenty of systems accept the former and refuse the latter. Second, speed — a memory subsystem runs every module at the slowest common rate the platform will clock, so a faster module in a mixed set buys nothing, and the sensible move is to match what is already installed or replace the set. Third, error correction, which most consumer laptops do not support at all and which some mobile workstations and edge appliances require; the ECC filter is there when the platform calls for it. Specifications on these cards are read from the manufacturer's own product title, so a value the manufacturer did not state is left blank rather than guessed.
FAQ
DDR4 SODIMM laptop memory questions
- Will a DDR4 SODIMM fit my laptop?
- Only if the system is a DDR4 platform. SO-DIMM generations are keyed differently — the notch is in a different position on DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 modules — so a module from the wrong generation will not seat, and forcing one damages the slot. Check the system's service manual or specification sheet for the memory type, the maximum capacity per slot and the total the board supports, then filter to that capacity here.
- What is the difference between a SODIMM and a DIMM?
- Size and pin count. A DDR4 SO-DIMM (small outline) is roughly 67 mm long with 260 pins and is what laptops, mini PCs, small-form-factor systems and many appliances take. A full-size DDR4 DIMM is roughly 133 mm with 288 pins and is what desktops and servers take. They are not interchangeable in either direction, and no adapter makes them so.
- Can I mix memory of different capacities or speeds?
- Usually yes, within limits. Most platforms will run a mixed set at the speed and timings of the slowest module, and some lose dual-channel operation when the two slots are not matched — which costs real bandwidth on integrated graphics in particular. If you are upgrading rather than replacing, matching the existing module's capacity and rated speed is the safest route; if you are buying both slots at once, buy them as a matched pair or kit.
- Do I need ECC SODIMM memory?
- Only if the platform supports it and your workload calls for it. ECC (error-correcting code) memory detects and corrects single-bit errors in place, which matters for edge servers, storage appliances and mobile workstations running long computations. The great majority of consumer and business laptops neither support nor accept it, and an ECC module in a non-ECC system will either run without the feature or not post at all. The error-correction filter on this page lets you see each set separately.
- How do I find the memory that matches a specific OEM part number?
- Use the memory finder, which searches module titles for the OEM cross-reference string that third-party manufacturers print on their own products — the HP, Dell, Lenovo, Cisco or Supermicro part the module is built to replace. The search box on this page is narrower on purpose: it searches only within DDR4 SO-DIMMs, by product name or part number.
- Is this memory TAA compliant?
- Every line is screened for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status before checkout. Country of origin varies by part number and by production run, so state the requirement with your quote request and we confirm it against the exact SKUs you are ordering.
Buying memory in quantity?
Send the module spec, the system it is going into, or a bill of materials. Memory pricing moves week to week, so we quote the exact part across your quantity, confirm current stock and hold the price for the quote period.
