About 0U vertical rack PDUs
0U is a rack-height class, and it means the strip occupies none. Instead of taking a horizontal slot between two servers, a 0U PDU mounts vertically in the channel behind or beside the rear rails and runs most of the height of the cabinet. Two things follow from that, and both are why it is the data-center default. The obvious one is that every rack unit stays available for equipment. The less obvious one is outlet proximity: a full-height strip puts a receptacle within a foot or so of whatever needs it, which shortens power cords, keeps the rear of the rack passable, and makes it possible to trace which cord belongs to which host without pulling the bundle apart.
Fit is the thing to confirm before ordering. A 0U strip needs a clear vertical channel — cable managers, deep chassis and side-mounted cable trays are the usual obstructions — plus the mounting hardware for your cabinet, which is frequently a per-manufacturer button or bracket rather than anything universal. Length matters too: a strip sized for a 42U cabinet does not belong in a 24U wall enclosure, and a short strip in a tall rack puts half the outlets out of reach. After that the electrical spec is the same conversation as any other PDU — input plug, nameplate amperage against your continuous load, and a receptacle mix that matches the cords you own. 0U vertical rack PDUs questions
- What does 0U mean on a PDU?
- That it consumes no rack units. A 0U PDU mounts vertically in the cabinet's side channel — behind or beside the rear rails — rather than horizontally between two pieces of equipment, so the full height of the rack stays available for gear. It is sometimes written zero-U, and often just called a vertical PDU.
- Will a 0U strip fit my rack?
- Check three things: that the vertical channel is clear of cable managers and deep chassis for the length of the strip, that you have the mounting hardware your cabinet needs (buttons and brackets are often manufacturer-specific rather than universal), and that the strip's length suits the cabinet height. A 42U-length strip in a short rack has nowhere to go; a short strip in a tall rack leaves the top of the cabinet reaching for extension cords.
- 0U vertical or 1U horizontal?
- Vertical for a rack that is full or heading that way, and for high outlet counts — a 0U strip carries far more receptacles than a 1U tray and costs no rack units to do it. Horizontal when the vertical channel is already occupied, when the cabinet is too shallow for a rear-mounted strip, or when the outlets genuinely need to be at the front for accessibility.
- Does this page show only vertical units?
- It shows the 0U rack-height class, read from the manufacturer's own title. Nearly every 0U PDU is a vertical strip, but a minority of rows state the height without stating an orientation and a small number state horizontal, so the Mounting control is left on the filter rail — set it to Vertical (0U) if you want only the rows that say so.
