About switched PDUs
A rack PDU comes in three intelligence tiers, and the difference between them is what you can do without walking to the rack. A basic PDU distributes power and nothing else. A metered PDU adds measurement — how much current the strip, a bank or an individual outlet is drawing — so a circuit gets loaded deliberately instead of by guesswork. A switched PDU adds control: each outlet can be turned off, turned on or power-cycled from a browser or over SNMP, and most switched models meter as well. That last capability is usually what someone searching for one is actually buying. A hung device at an unstaffed site gets a hard reboot in seconds instead of a site visit, a rack can be brought back up in a deliberate order after an outage so storage is ready before the hosts look for it, and an outlet that should stay dead can be locked off.
Two things decide which switched unit fits. The electrical spec comes first: the input plug has to match the whip the electrician installed, the nameplate rating has to cover the continuous load with the standard margin, and the receptacle mix — C13 for 1U servers and switches, C19 for blade chassis and large UPS units, NEMA for 120 V equipment — has to match the cords you already own. The rack form comes second: a 0U strip mounts up the side channel and costs no rack units, while 1U and 2U horizontal units are the answer when that channel is full or the outlets need to face the front. Every row here is a unit whose manufacturer's title states switched operation, and the specifications on each card are read from that title too — a value the manufacturer did not print is left blank rather than guessed.

- What does a switched PDU actually let me do?
- Turn an individual outlet off, on, or through a timed power cycle from a browser, an SSH session or an SNMP set — without anyone being in the room. Beyond the emergency reboot, the common uses are staged startup after an outage (bring storage up before the hosts), locking unused outlets so nothing gets quietly plugged in, and per-outlet current readings, since most switched units are metered as well.
- Switched or metered — which one do I need?
- If you never need to cycle a device remotely, metered does the capacity-planning job for less money. Choose switched when a site visit is expensive or slow, when equipment has to come up in a defined order, or when outlets belong to different teams or tenants and need to be controlled independently. A switched unit is generally metered too, so it is the superset — the question is only whether the control is worth the difference.
- How much load can I put on one PDU?
- A continuous load should not exceed 80% of the nameplate rating, so a 20 A PDU is a 16 A working budget and a 30 A PDU is 24 A. What that means in watts depends on the voltage: 24 A is roughly 5 kW at 208 V but only about 2.9 kW at 120 V. Use the rated-amperage filter to set a floor. Rows whose title never states a rating sit that filter out entirely — the figure is only ever read from the title, never inferred from the input plug.
- Do switched PDUs need a network connection?
- For control, yes. They carry an Ethernet port — often a serial console too — and are managed over HTTPS, SSH or SNMP, which is why they belong on the management VLAN and not on the production network they may have to reboot. Without a network the unit still passes power with its outlets in their configured default state; nothing can be changed remotely.
