About Cat6 patch cables
Cat6 is the sensible default for new copper. It is specified to 250 MHz against Cat5e's 100 MHz, which buys margin on a gigabit link rather than new capability — both carry 1000BASE-T for the full 100 metre channel — and it is that margin, not a speed number, that makes the difference on a real installation with imperfect terminations and a long service life. Where Cat6 does change what is possible is 10GBASE-T, and this is the part worth reading carefully: Cat6 supports 10 Gb only to about 55 metres, and in tightly packed bundles where alien crosstalk between adjacent cables is worst that figure drops to roughly 37 metres. If a link has to carry 10 Gb across a full-length run, the answer is Cat6a, not a better Cat6 cord.
Two practical notes about this page. First, the total budget you are working with is a 100 metre channel — up to 90 metres of solid-conductor cable in the wall plus about 10 metres of stranded patch cord at the two ends combined, and the patch allowance is smaller than people expect because stranded conductors attenuate slightly more than solid ones. Buying a 25 ft cord to reach a switch three feet away spends that budget on nothing. Second, both finished patch cords and bulk boxes are in scope here, so the lengths on the page run from under a foot to around a thousand feet; the minimum and maximum length filters are the fastest way to keep the page to cords. Lengths are shown in feet, converted where the manufacturer printed metres or inches, and every specification on a card is read from the manufacturer's own title — anything not stated is left blank rather than guessed.

Cat6 patch cables questions
- How far will Cat6 run?
- For gigabit Ethernet, the full 100 metre channel — 90 metres of horizontal cable plus about 10 metres of patch cords. For 10GBASE-T it is much shorter: roughly 55 metres, and as little as about 37 metres where cables are bundled tightly enough for alien crosstalk to matter. Any 10 Gb link that needs more distance than that wants Cat6a.
- Cat6 or Cat5e?
- Cat5e carries gigabit to 100 metres and is still perfectly serviceable, so an existing Cat5e link is not automatically a problem. For anything you are buying today the price gap on patch cords is small and Cat6's extra headroom is worth having — it tolerates a marginal termination better and leaves room for short-run 10 Gb. What actually constrains you is the weakest component in the channel: a Cat6 cord does not upgrade a Cat5e link.
- Can I run PoE over these cables?
- Yes — PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ all run over Cat5e and above, and the cable does not need to be special. What matters at the higher power classes is heat: up to 90 W at the source, current-driven temperature rise inside a large bundle is the real limit, and larger-gauge conductors (23 AWG rather than 26 AWG) with smaller bundles keep it in check. Thin, flexible slim-profile cords are convenient at the rack and a poor choice for long high-power runs.
- Are Cat6a cords on this page?
- No — they have their own page. A title that says Cat6a is read as Cat6a and never as Cat6, so the two pages do not overlap and neither shows the other's cords. If you are not sure which category you need, the deciding question is usually whether a 10 Gb link has to run further than about 55 metres.
