About metered PDUs
A metered PDU answers the question a basic strip cannot: how much of this circuit is already spoken for. That matters because the honest capacity of a branch circuit is 80% of its nameplate rating for a continuous load — 16 A on a 20 A feed, 24 A on a 30 A feed — and the only way to know where you stand against that number is to measure it. Nameplate figures on the equipment are worst-case and consistently overstate real draw, so racks planned on paper end up either half empty or one power supply away from tripping a breaker nobody can reset remotely. A metered unit replaces both outcomes with a reading, and a networked one turns that reading into a trend you can plan against.
The depth of metering varies more than the word suggests, and the manufacturer's title rarely distinguishes it: some units meter the whole inlet, some meter each bank, and outlet-level models report every receptacle individually — which is what per-team or per-tenant chargeback needs. Vendors also split the word itself, calling a unit with a local current display metered and one that reports over the network monitored; this page's scope covers both spellings because they describe one tier. What it cannot cover is a unit whose title says only that it is managed — that states no tier the catalog can read, so those rows sit out this page and are best found on the PDU selector, where nothing is locked. As everywhere on the site, each card's specifications are read from the manufacturer's own title and a value that was not stated is left blank.
FAQ
metered PDUs questions
- What does a metered PDU measure?
- At minimum the current drawn through the inlet, shown on a local display. More capable units meter each bank separately, and outlet-metered models report every receptacle individually. Networked models publish current, voltage, kilowatt-hours and often power factor over SNMP or a web interface so the figures can be trended and alarmed. Which level a specific model provides is on its product page — the title usually says no more than metered.
- What is the difference between metered and monitored?
- In practice they name the same tier, and different manufacturers pick different words. Where there is a distinction, metered tends to mean a unit with a local display and monitored one that reports over the network. Because both words describe measurement without switching, this page includes both — check the product page for whether the model you want carries a network port.
- Do I need metering if I already know what my equipment draws?
- Nameplate ratings are worst-case figures for a fully populated, fully loaded chassis, and real draw is usually well below them. Planning from nameplates leaves capacity stranded; planning from optimistic estimates trips breakers. Measurement is what lets you load a circuit to the 80% continuous limit on purpose — and it is the record you need when someone asks why the rack cannot take another host.
- Metered or switched?
- Metered tells you what is happening; switched also lets you do something about it from a distance. If the value you want is capacity planning and a bill you can defend, metered is the cheaper answer. If you also need to power-cycle a hung device without a site visit, or bring a rack up in sequence after an outage, that is the switched page.
Standardising on one PDU?
Send the circuit spec and the rack count. We quote the exact model across the quantity, confirm current stock and hold the price for the quote period — and flag it if a close alternative ships sooner.
