    Low voltage is a category defined mostly by what it is not: not line voltage, not the electrician's scope, and in most buildings not any single vendor's responsibility. In practice it is three systems sharing one set of pathways — the data drops, the powered devices riding those drops, and the security devices that were specified by somebody else on a different drawing.

    They get installed in the same ceiling in the same week by the same crew, and they fail in the same handful of ways: a run that is longer than the channel allows, a bundle of powered runs that gets warm in the middle, a patch panel terminated in a style nothing else on site uses, or a door that needed four conductors nobody counted. Quoting all three from one bill of materials does not make the install easy, but it does mean the parts agree with each other when they arrive.

    Choosing the category per run, not per building

    The channel has a fixed budget: 90 metres for the permanent link and 100 metres for the full channel once the patch cords at both ends are counted. That single number does more to shape a low voltage design than any product decision in it — it sets where the telecom room has to be, it decides whether the far corner of a floor plate needs an intermediate closet, and it is the reason a handful of awkward runs sometimes justify a fiber link or a second rack rather than a longer copper pull that will never certify.

    Category choice sits on top of that. Cat6 remains entirely adequate for a large share of ordinary drops; Cat6A earns its place where the application demands it, where higher PoE classes are running in dense bundles, or where the run is long enough that thermal derating starts eating into the margin. The comparison that misleads people is the one made on cable price alone, because Cat6A generally costs more to install than to buy — larger outside diameter, tighter bend radius, more pathway fill and slower terminations all land in labor. We flag the runs that genuinely need it instead of upgrading a whole floor as insurance.

    Heat is the part that gets underestimated. A bundle carrying many high-class powered runs is warmer in the middle than at the edges, a warmer conductor carries more insertion loss, and the loss shows up as a link that certifies marginally and then degrades. The mitigations are all cheap while the ceiling is open — smaller bundles, better separation, a higher category on the affected runs, shorter runs to a closer closet — and all expensive once it is closed.

    Security devices

    Where cameras and readers change the cabling conversation

    Cameras are network endpoints, so they ride the same drops as everything else — but their positions are chosen for what has to be seen, which puts them at exterior corners, in high bays, at gates and on poles rather than at desks. Those positions bring their own bill: outdoor-rated or gel-filled cable where a run leaves the conditioned envelope, surge protection and grounding where it leaves the building entirely, and mounting and pathway that a floor plan does not show. Outdoor positions are also where power stops being free, which is why coverage designs tend toward fewer, better-chosen positions rather than more of them.

    Access control is not a data-only run. A single controlled opening commonly needs the reader, the request-to-exit device, the door position switch and lock power, which is why composite cable exists and why the count comes off the door schedule rather than the floor plan. Getting that schedule before the cable order is one of the cheapest hours on the project: an opening discovered late is a return trip through a ceiling that has already been closed.

    This is also the part of a low voltage order where NDAA §889 screening does the most work, because covered equipment turns up in video surveillance more than in any other category — including inside hardware that carries somebody else's label. Screening is per line and before the quote leaves, with alternates named for anything that does not clear.

    Where our line falls

    We are a national supplier and integrator, not a local low-voltage or electrical contractor bidding hourly labor. We specify the cabling, source it through authorized US distribution, quote it as a bill of materials, and coordinate installation as part of the projects whose scope includes it. Permits, inspections, firestop penetration sign-off and code compliance stay with the licensed trades performing the work and with the authority having jurisdiction, and no supplier can carry those on your behalf.

    Supplying the cabling behind a camera or a reader is also not the same as running a security program. We do not monitor cameras, review footage, respond to alarms, issue credentials or hold credentials on your system after handover — that stays with your organization or the provider you contract. We make no uptime or response-time commitment on the plant or on anything riding it, and availability is stated per line rather than promised in general terms.

    What counts as low voltage cabling?

    In practice it is the structured data cabling, the powered devices riding it over PoE, and the low-voltage side of security and audiovisual systems — network drops, camera and reader runs, door hardware wiring, speaker and display cabling. What it is not is line-voltage electrical work, which is a licensed electrician's scope with its own permits and inspections. We quote the low-voltage materials and coordinate installation inside a project; the electrical scope stays where it belongs.

    Cat6 or Cat6A for a PoE deployment?

    Decide per run. Cat6 is adequate for a large share of ordinary drops; Cat6A earns its place where higher 802.3bt classes run in dense bundles, where runs are long enough for thermal derating to matter, or where the application genuinely needs the bandwidth. The trap is comparing on cable price alone — Cat6A generally costs more to install than to buy, because the diameter, bend radius and pathway fill all show up in labor. We flag the runs that need it instead of upgrading the floor as insurance.

    How long can a Cat6 run be?

    The permanent link is capped at 90 metres and the full channel at 100 metres once the patch cords at both ends are counted, so anything measured on a plan needs slack for the route the cable actually takes through the ceiling. Past that, the answer is not a longer pull — it is an intermediate closet or a fiber link back to the main room. We flag the runs that are close to the limit during scoping, because a link that certifies marginally is a fault waiting for a warm summer.

    Can one order cover the data drops and the camera cabling?

    Yes, and it usually should. Cameras and readers ride the same pathways as the data drops and get installed by the same crew in the same week, so pricing them separately is how a site ends up with mismatched panels, two labeling schemes and a door that needed conductors nobody ordered. Send the floor plan with the door and camera schedule and both come back on one bill of materials.

    Do you supply the cameras and readers themselves, or only the cabling?

    Both. Camera, reader, credential and panel lines are quoted through our distribution network against your own scope rather than listed with a shelf price, because what a system costs depends on the door count, the sightlines and the retention period rather than on a part number. The cabling, the devices and the switching that powers them can be quoted as one package or as separate orders, whichever suits how you are buying.

    Is low voltage hardware TAA and §889 screened?

    Every line, before the quote goes out — and it matters most here. Video surveillance is the category where NDAA §889 covered equipment most often turns up, including inside rebadged hardware, and the prohibition has no low-dollar exemption. Manufacturer-stated country of origin is recorded per line and the maker with its parent and affiliates is checked against the covered-entity list, with alternates named for anything that does not clear.
