PoE Network Infrastructure
Cameras, access points, phones, door controllers and sensors all draw from one power budget, and that budget is usually the last number anyone checks. We total it honestly from your device list before quoting the switching, the injectors and the UPS that has to carry it through an outage.

One budget, four departments drawing on it
Power over Ethernet quietly became the shared utility of the building. Physical security hangs cameras off it, facilities hangs access control and sensors off it, IT hangs access points and phones off it, and each of those projects was budgeted separately. The switch in the middle has a single total power budget, and it does not care which department last added a device. A switch can have forty-eight PoE ports and a budget that cannot drive them all at class maximum — which is why the useful question is never "how many PoE ports" but "how many watts, at what class, with what headroom, and what happens when the power fails".

Each line is quoted with availability stated, and screened for TAA and §889 before the quote goes out.
PoE switching sized to the total
Allied Telesis, Netgear, TRENDnet, EnGenius and Ubiquiti carry priced PoE switching across access and closet tiers. We quote against the summed class draw plus headroom, and state the budget figure on the quote so the number is auditable later.
Injectors, midspans and splitters
Not every device belongs on a PoE switch port. A single high-draw camera at the end of a run, a device on a non-PoE switch, or a retrofit into an existing closet is often cheaper and cleaner on an injector or midspan than on a new chassis.
The UPS underneath it
PoE turns the closet into the power source for the cameras and door hardware, so the closet UPS is now carrying life-of-building devices. Eaton, Vertiv and Schneider Electric units are quoted with the runtime you ask for, not a default.
Cabling and patch fields
Higher-class PoE puts real current on the copper, which makes cable category, bundle size and run length part of the power conversation rather than a separate trade. Patch cords, panels and management are quoted with the switch.
How the budget gets totalled
We start from a device list, not a port count: what is being powered, how many of each, and what class each device negotiates. Class matters more than the marketing wattage — a device that advertises a peak draw usually negotiates a class, and the switch reserves against the class. Then we add the devices that are already installed but were never on anyone's list, because those are the ones that turn a comfortable budget into an over-subscribed one.
Headroom is a decision, not a constant. A closet that will take another camera run next year is sized differently from one that is finished. We ask which it is, quote to that, and write the assumption on the quote so the next person can see what the number was based on.
Where the total lands close to a chassis boundary, we say so and price both sides of it — a second smaller switch is sometimes cheaper and always more resilient than a single unit running at the edge of its supply.
Everything we need to total a floor
- Device list by type and count — cameras, APs, phones, door controllers, sensors, clocks
- Class or model per device type, where you have it (we can look up the common ones)
- Existing switch models and their current PoE budgets, if this is a retrofit
- Run lengths that exceed 100 m or pass through unconditioned space
- Runtime you need from the closet UPS when the power drops
- Whether the closet is finished or expected to grow — headroom is priced, not assumed
PoE budget questions
Will a 48-port PoE switch power 48 devices?
Only if the total power budget covers the summed class draw of everything connected. Port count and power budget are separate specifications, and plenty of switches have more ports than watts. Send the device list and we confirm the budget against it before you order.
Do we need 802.3bt, or is 802.3at enough?
It depends entirely on the devices. Most access points and cameras are comfortable on 802.3at; pan-tilt-zoom cameras with heaters, high-density Wi-Fi 7 access points, and some displays and door hardware are the ones that push into 802.3bt. We quote to the device list rather than defaulting to the higher standard and charging you for it.
Can you power devices the switch cannot reach?
Injectors, midspans and extenders cover most of those cases, and are frequently cheaper than moving the closet. Beyond the standard copper distance the answer stops being PoE and becomes a cabling or fiber question, which we quote in the same document.
Does the closet UPS need to change when we add PoE?
Usually yes, and it is the step most often skipped. Once cameras and access control draw their power from the switch, the closet UPS is carrying loads that used to have their own supplies. We size it to the runtime you specify and quote batteries as a lifecycle line rather than a one-time item.
