A PoE injector is the answer to a specific problem: you have a camera, an access point or a door controller at the end of a cable run, and the switch it lands on has no PoE on that port. Rather than replacing the switch, an injector — a midspan — sits inline and adds power to the pair, so the device gets data from the existing switch and power from a wall socket near the rack. For a handful of cameras added to a site that was never wired for them, that is a far cheaper and far faster answer than a switch refresh.

Wattage is the decision that matters, and it is set by a standard rather than a marketing number. 802.3af (PoE) provides roughly 15.4 W at the source, 802.3at (PoE+) about 30 W, and 802.3bt (PoE++) 60 W or 90 W depending on the type — and cable losses mean the device at the far end always receives less than the injector supplies. A fixed indoor dome may sit comfortably inside 802.3af; add a heater, a blower, an illuminator, a wiper or pan-tilt-zoom motors and the same camera family jumps to 802.3at or 802.3bt. Read the camera's own maximum draw, not its idle figure, and buy the standard above it.

The rest is the site. Link speed matters where the camera is multi-gigabit or the run feeds an aggregation point — the 2.5G, 5G and 10G injectors here exist for that. Port count matters when several devices need power at one location, where a four-port or eight-port midspan is tidier than four wall warts. And where the injector will live in a soffit, a plant room, a DIN-rail cabinet or an unconditioned enclosure rather than in a comfortable rack, the industrial models with wide temperature ranges and IP-rated housings are the ones that survive. How to choose a PoE injector

  • Start from the powered device's maximum draw, not its idle figure. A camera with a heater, blower, illuminator, wiper or pan-tilt-zoom motors draws far more when all of it is running on a cold night than it does on a bench, and that peak is the number the injector has to cover.
  • Buy by standard: 802.3af is roughly 15.4 W at the source, 802.3at about 30 W, 802.3bt 60 W or 90 W. Then allow for cable loss — the device at the far end receives less than the injector supplies, and a long run costs more of it — so leave headroom rather than sizing to the exact figure.
  • Match the link speed to the camera and the run. Gigabit is enough for the great majority of IP cameras; the 2.5G, 5G and 10G injectors here are for multi-gigabit endpoints and for aggregation points, and putting a gigabit injector in front of a multi-gigabit device caps the link at the injector.
  • Use a multi-port midspan where several devices share one location. Four-port and eight-port midspans put the power in one managed place with one power feed instead of a wall wart per camera, which is both tidier and much easier to put on a UPS.
  • Specify an industrial injector for anywhere that is not a conditioned room. Wide-temperature models rated from around -40 °C, IP30 housings and DIN-rail or wall mounting are what survive a soffit, a plant room, a gate cabinet or an outdoor enclosure; a desktop injector in that position is a callout waiting to happen.
  • Check the pinout family where equipment is older. Injectors deliver power on different pairs — the alternative A and B schemes — and while standards-compliant devices negotiate correctly, some legacy or passive equipment does not. Where a device is old or non-standard, confirm the injector's scheme against it.
  • Consider a PoE switch instead once the count grows. Injectors are the right answer for a few devices added to existing infrastructure; past roughly a handful at one location, a PoE switch is usually cheaper, easier to power-protect and easier to manage than a shelf of midspans.

Injector or PoE switch: which one the site actually needs

The honest rule is a count. If you are adding one to a few powered devices to a site whose switching is already installed and has no spare PoE, an injector is the correct and much cheaper answer: it needs no configuration, it does not touch the existing network, and it can be added the same afternoon. It is also the right answer when a single device needs more power than the installed switch can give — a 90 W 802.3bt camera or access point in front of a switch that only does 802.3at, for instance, where one injector solves it without replacing the switch.

Once the count climbs, the arithmetic reverses. Eight injectors mean eight power supplies, eight things to put on a UPS, eight things to find when one fails, and no central view of which port is delivering what. A PoE switch consolidates all of that into one managed device with one power budget and per-port control, which also means a camera can be power-cycled remotely instead of by someone walking to a soffit. The multi-port midspans on this page sit between the two: one chassis, one feed, four or eight powered ports, and no switch configuration to touch.

Wattage, cable loss and the environment

Three things cost power between the injector and the camera, and only one of them is on the datasheet. The standard sets what the source supplies — roughly 15.4 W for 802.3af, about 30 W for 802.3at, 60 W or 90 W for the 802.3bt types — and the device's rated maximum is what it wants. Between them sits the cable: resistance over a long run at a small conductor gauge turns some of that budget into heat, which is why the received power is always lower than the supplied power and why a 90-metre run to a heated camera should not be sized to the exact figure on the box. Buying the next standard up is usually cheaper than diagnosing a camera that reboots on the coldest night of the year.

The environment decides the chassis. A plastic-shell desktop injector is fine in a rack or on a shelf; it is not fine in a soffit, a gate cabinet, a plant room or an unheated roof space, which is where a great many camera injectors actually end up.
