Industrial Ethernet Switching

Plant floors, substations and roadside cabinets need DIN-rail mounting, wide operating temperatures and redundant DC power. We spec to the environment the equipment lives in rather than to an office datasheet — and we price the industrial UPS behind it in the same document.

Scope
Hardened switching for plant, substation, cabinet and outdoor sites
Specified on
Temperature range, mounting, DC input, redundancy and vibration
Boundary
Process safety and OT operation belong to the plant
Overview

The office switch in the cabinet is a summer problem

Commercial switching is specified for a room that is heated, cooled, clean and mains-powered. A roadside cabinet in August is none of those things, and neither is a substation, a plant floor near a press, or an unconditioned pump house. Industrial networking exists for that gap: DIN-rail mounting rather than rack ears, an operating range that spans real seasons rather than a comfortable office, dual DC inputs so a supply failure is not an outage, fanless convection cooling because a fan is a moving part in a dusty room, and mechanical tolerance for vibration. Buy the office switch because it was cheaper and you will buy it again.

How to specify

Six environmental questions before any port count

Temperature range at the actual mounting point, not the ambient outside — a sealed cabinet in direct sun runs far hotter than the air around it, and the switch inside sees the cabinet temperature. Then mounting: DIN rail is the norm in industrial cabinets and it changes the physical product, not merely a bracket.

Power input next. Industrial sites frequently distribute DC, and dual redundant inputs are common so that one supply can fail without dropping the segment. Then the media question — copper distances on a plant floor are often short but electrically noisy, which pushes links onto fiber for isolation as much as for reach.

Finally redundancy and continuity: whether the segment needs a ring topology with fast recovery, and what carries it through a supply interruption. Industrial UPS is a distinct product class from office UPS, and Eaton, Vertiv and Schneider Electric carry priced inventory across both.

Dedicated industrial networking specialists such as the DIN-rail-native brands do not carry verified priced rows in our catalog, so those lines are sourced on request through authorized US distribution and quoted with honest lead times rather than implied stock.

Limits

What stays yours to run

We source and integrate network equipment. We do not engineer control systems, make process-safety determinations, or claim that a network design is fit for a safety-instrumented function. Those belong to your controls engineers and your process safety authority, and no networking purchase changes that.

We are also careful about protocol and certification claims. Where a device or a program requires a specific industrial protocol conformance or a site-specific approval, we will source to the part number your engineers specify rather than asserting equivalence across a datasheet. If a line's certification position is not something we can verify, we say so.

Questions

Industrial networking questions

Can we use commercial switches in a cabinet if we add a fan?

Sometimes it survives; frequently it becomes a summer failure and a callout. The mismatch is not only temperature — it is mounting, DC input, dust tolerance, vibration and the absence of moving parts. Where the environment is genuinely benign we will say so rather than upselling hardened kit you do not need.

What temperature range should we specify?

The one at the mounting point, which in a sealed cabinet in sun can be far above the outdoor ambient. Tell us where the switch physically sits and what the site sees seasonally, and we specify against that rather than against a regional average.

Do you supply the DIN-rail brands our standard names?

Where a specialist industrial brand is not carried in our priced catalog, it is sourced on request through authorized US distribution and quoted with an honest lead time. We would rather state the lead time than imply a stock position we do not hold.

Industrial Ethernet Switching

Describe the cabinet, not the port count

Tell us where the switch sits, what the site sees seasonally and how power is distributed. A Uniqcli specialist returns hardened switching, industrial UPS and fiber isolation specified to that environment — screened, with lead times stated honestly.
