0U means the PDU consumes no rack units: it mounts down the side channel of a full-height cabinet rather than across the rails, so the long bodies carry the highest outlet counts and face their receptacles at the equipment. Pick the tier by what you must do without walking to the rack — basic distributes, metered displays the load, monitored puts it on the network, switched cycles outlets.
A 0U vertical PDU is the answer when rack units are the resource you have run out of. Instead of eating a U across the rails, it mounts down the side channel of a full-height cabinet and runs the length of it, which is why the long bodies carry the highest outlet counts and face the receptacles at the equipment they feed. In a dense cabinet where every rack unit is spoken for by a server, a switch or a shelf, the vertical body is often the only place a PDU can go — and buying the height back later, by pulling equipment to fit a horizontal strip, is the expensive way to learn that. Everything selected here mounts vertically in the 0U channel; the sizing rules below decide which one belongs in the cabinet.
After the form factor come the same four questions every rack PDU answers, and they are a ladder of what you must be able to do without walking to the rack. A basic unit distributes outlets behind a breaker and nothing more, which is the whole requirement in a cabinet somebody visits anyway. A metered unit puts the circuit's load on a local display, so headroom is a number you read instead of a limit you trip. A monitored unit puts that reading on the network, where a threshold can raise an alert and a load history feeds capacity planning. A switched unit adds per-outlet control, so a hung device is power-cycled from wherever you are. Most rows name their tier in the title; where one names only its outlets, its breaker and its cord, treat it as distribution and confirm the rest on the quote. Then match the outlets to the equipment, the input plug and voltage to the circuit the facility provides, and the cord length to the run — and where a purchase order names TAA, read it on the exact part number, because TAA Compliant is titled on some of these rows and not others.
Buyer's checklist
How to choose a 0U vertical rack PDU
- Confirm the cabinet has a side channel and the depth a vertical body needs behind the equipment — the whole point of 0U is that it consumes no rack units, but it does need somewhere to sit.
- Pick the tier by what you must do remotely: basic for distribution, metered for a local load reading, monitored to put that reading on the network, switched for per-outlet power cycling. Buy the tier your operating model needs, not the one with the most features.
- Match the outlets to the equipment: count C13 and C19 receptacles against the detachable cords in the rack, and NEMA 5-15R or 5-20R against everything that arrives with a plug moulded on.
- Match the input plug, voltage and phase to the circuit the facility provides — these titles name inlets from NEMA 5-15P and L5-20P through L6-30P and IEC 60309 at 120 V, 208 V and 230 V, with three-phase rows for high-density racks.
- Count the outlets against the vertical run: a long 0U body carries far more receptacles than a 1U strip, so size for the whole cabinet's growth rather than adding a second unit later.
- Where the order names TAA, read it on the part number — TAA Compliant is titled on some rows here and not others, and it is a per-part fact to verify on the exact unit you order.
Why the side channel wins in a dense rack
The trade the 0U body makes is space for reach. A vertical unit gives up nothing in rack units — it mounts where nothing else can — and in return it asks for the cabinet's side channel and a little depth, and it puts its outlets slightly further from hand than a horizontal strip across the rails. In a fully-populated server cabinet that trade is almost always worth taking, because rack units are the scarce resource and the vertical run is the only free real estate left. Dual-corded equipment wants two of them, one down each side, fed from two circuits and balanced so either side can carry the rack alone if a feed fails. Standardize the part number per rack archetype — the same 0U unit in every server cabinet — and cord lengths, outlet maps, labels and spares collapse into one decision instead of twenty.
Sizing power, and buying it with the rack
Where a row names a kW rating, size against it and the branch circuit behind it; where it names none — many do not — the input plug and the voltage on the title are the sizing facts, and we confirm the kW with the quote. Keep the usual convention of staying near eighty percent of a continuously loaded circuit in mind, and confirm it with your facility's electrician rather than any product page, because the circuit, the breaker and the local code are what actually govern. Power is the part of a rack most often planned last and regretted first, so Uniqcli quotes the 0U PDUs together with the rack and cable management around them, the UPS or upstream distribution the room needs, the monitoring or DCIM licensing a networked unit implies, and the installation labour, on one order so the pieces arrive matched.
FAQ
Common questions
- What does 0U mean on a rack PDU?
- 0U — also written Zero U — means the unit consumes no rack units. Instead of mounting horizontally across the rails and eating a U, a 0U PDU mounts vertically in the side channel of the cabinet and runs its length. That is the whole reason to choose one: in a dense cabinet where every rack unit is already spoken for, the vertical body is often the only place a PDU can go, and its long run typically carries a higher outlet count than a horizontal strip. Check that the cabinet has the side channel and depth a vertical body needs before committing to it.
- Should I buy a basic, metered, monitored or switched 0U PDU?
- Decide it on what you must be able to do without walking to the rack. Basic distributes outlets behind a breaker, which is the whole requirement in a cabinet somebody visits anyway. Metered adds a local display so the circuit's load is a number you read rather than a limit you trip. Monitored puts that reading on the network for threshold alerts, dashboards and a load history. Switched adds per-outlet control so a hung device is power-cycled remotely. Most titles here name their tier; where a row names only its outlets, breaker and cord, treat it as distribution and confirm the rest on the quote.
- Can business, government and education buyers order these?
- Every line Uniqcli quotes is sourced through US distribution and screened for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status before checkout — with documentation tied to the specific part number, not a product family.
