Riser cable exists because of where the cable goes, not because of what it carries. A riser is the vertical shaft a building uses to carry cable between floors, and communications cable installed in it has to be listed for that path — CMR is the listing that says so. A CMR jacket is formulated to resist flame spreading up the shaft from one floor to the next, which is the whole design intent: a riser is the vertical path a fire would otherwise climb. Every bulk box carried below names Cat6 and a riser or CMR rating in the manufacturer's own title, which is the fact a general contractor or an inspector expects you to be able to point at.

What the rating does not do is decide the job for you. Whether a given run needs CMR riser, CMP plenum or general-purpose CM is a code question answered by the adopted edition of the National Electrical Code in your jurisdiction and by the authority having jurisdiction on the project — not by a product page and not by what the last building used. The reliable planning rule is one-directional: a plenum-listed cable may generally stand in for riser, but riser cable installed in a plenum is the finding that stops a job, so read the substitution the right way round before the order.

The second decision is conductor and length. Non-terminated boxes are for the permanent backbone: solid conductor, pulled up the riser and terminated onto patch panels at both ends, never plugged straight into a device. Finished riser cords are for the ends and the short jumps. How to choose Cat6 riser cable

  • Confirm the run is a riser before you price it. The CMR requirement follows the pathway — the vertical shaft between floors — not the device at the end of it, and it is set by the adopted National Electrical Code edition in your jurisdiction and by the authority having jurisdiction. Get that answer from the inspector or the engineer of record, not from a datasheet.
  • Read the substitution the right way round. A plenum-listed (CMP) cable may generally be used in a riser; a riser-listed (CMR) cable may generally be used in a general-purpose run — but never the reverse. Riser cable in a plenum is a code finding, and finding it after the ceiling is closed is the expensive version.
  • Pull solid, patch stranded. Non-terminated solid-conductor boxes are for the permanent backbone and terminate onto panels; stranded assemblies flex and belong at the ends. A solid conductor repeatedly flexed as a patch lead breaks at the strain point, and the titles here state which construction each part is.
  • Match the box to the run count, not to the shaft. These boxes are titled at 250ft, 500ft and 1000ft; a multi-floor backbone burns a 1000ft box quickly once you account for the service loop at each panel and the vertical rise itself. Buying the length short is how a job ends with a splice nobody wanted.
  • Use colour as documentation. Every one of these parts names its jacket colour in its own title, and a scheme — one colour per service, per floor or per riser — is the cheapest labelling you will ever buy, because it survives the label falling off.
  • Where the run passes machinery or heavy electrical plant in the shaft, specify a foil-shielded (F/UTP) riser box and bond the shield at both ends. Several parts here are shielded and others are UTP; a shielded cable terminated into an unshielded panel has no shield.
  • Where the purchase order carries an origin clause, read TAA on the part number itself. Several parts on this page carry a TAA marking in their own title and others in the same family do not; screening results are available with your quote on request, tied to the specific part number.

CMR, CMP and CM — what the jacket rating actually decides

The three common communications cable listings describe fire performance in three different building situations, and the hierarchy runs one way. CMP is the plenum listing, for cable in air-handling spaces; CMR is the riser listing, for vertical runs passing between floors; CM is general purpose, for runs within a floor that are neither. A cable listed for the more demanding situation may generally be used in the less demanding one, so a CMP cable can stand in for CMR and a CMR cable can stand in for CM — but the substitution never runs the other way, and a general-purpose cable in a riser is the finding that stops a job.

A backbone job is really two purchases. The permanent riser is the vertical run: solid-conductor cable pulled up the shaft and terminated onto a patch panel on each floor, tested and left alone.
