Plenum-rated cable exists because of where the cable goes, not because of what it carries. In a building with a return-air plenum — the space above a suspended ceiling or under a raised floor that the HVAC system moves air through — the communications cable in that space has to be listed for it, and CMP is the listing that says so. A plenum jacket is formulated to resist flame spread and to produce less smoke, which is the whole design intent: in a fire, the plenum is the path that would otherwise distribute smoke through the building. Boxes and cords: what to buy for the run and what to buy for the ends

A structured cabling job is really two purchases. The permanent link is the horizontal run: solid-conductor cable pulled from the closet to the outlet, terminated onto a patch panel at one end and a jack at the other, tested and left alone.
