Cable raceway is what you use when the cable cannot go inside the wall. A retrofit office where the drops arrive at head height, a classroom where the panel went up after the building was finished, a lab bench, a floor crossing that people walk over, a rack where a bundle needs to be held and hidden — all of them are the same job: a channel fixed to the surface, a cover snapped or screwed over it, and a set of fittings that turn the corners without kinking the cable. It is unglamorous and it is the difference between an installation that looks finished and one that looks improvised.

Size the channel by what goes in it and by what will go in it later. How to choose raceway and wire duct

  • Match the material and finish to the room. PVC is the default and takes paint; steel and stainless are for corridors, plant rooms and anywhere the channel takes knocks; aluminium sits between them. Check for a UL listing and a flame rating where the run passes through occupied space.
  • Decide the fixing method before the order. Adhesive-backed raceway is fast and reversible on a clean, sound surface and unreliable on textured or dusty ones; screw-mounted channel is the answer for anything permanent, anything heavy and anything above head height.
  • Plan floor crossings as their own product. A cable crossing an open floor needs a low, wide walk-over profile, not a wall raceway laid on its side — the profile is what keeps it from being a trip hazard and what lets a chair roll over it.
  • Order the whole system in one pass: base, cover, couplers, inside and outside corners, tees, entrance ends, end caps and any junction boxes. A run held up for one fitting is a room that cannot be handed over, and the fittings are the line items most often left off a first quote.

Raceway, wiring duct and overfloor: three shapes, three jobs

Surface raceway is a closed channel with a cover, and it is what goes on a wall in a room people use. It comes in a range of profiles for a reason: a small strip behind a desk hides a monitor and network cable, a mid-size channel carries a handful of drops along a classroom wall, and the larger sections take a bundle across a corridor. Because the cover is solid, cables enter at the ends, at junction boxes and at deliberate drop points — which is exactly the discipline you want on a surface anyone can see or touch.

Open-slot wiring duct is the slotted version, and it lives inside racks, control panels and equipment cabinets. The slots let a conductor leave the channel anywhere, so a panel with dozens of terminations can be wired neatly with every cable taking the shortest sane path. Overfloor raceway is the third shape: a low, wide profile with a shallow ramp on each side, designed to be walked and rolled over. Each of the three is a poor substitute for the other two, and specifying the wrong one is the single most common raceway mistake — usually discovered when someone tries to close a lid over a bundle that was never meant to be in that channel.
