Open source with a support contract is still a procurement line item. We quote the subscription and the entitlement count alongside the hardware it will run on, so both arrive on the same purchase order.

Overview

The software is free; the thing you are buying is the contract

Enterprise Linux procurement confuses people who have not done it, because the operating system can be downloaded and the invoice is for something else entirely — a support subscription, counted per physical system or per socket pair or per virtual guest depending on the edition, at a service level that determines whether a Saturday outage has a phone number attached to it. That is a real budget line with a real renewal date, and it is almost always bought at the wrong time relative to the hardware it runs on. We quote the entitlement and the server together, with the count, the tier and the term stated explicitly on each line.

What varies

Three variables that change the number

Entitlement unit first. A subscription may cover a physical system, a socket pair, or a fixed number of virtual guests, and the same estate counted three ways produces three different totals. Virtualized estates are where this most often goes wrong: a host that runs thirty guests may need a different entitlement type than the same host running two.

Support tier second. Standard and premium tiers differ on response commitment and coverage hours, and the difference is genuinely material for systems that carry an out-of-hours obligation. We put the tier on the line rather than leaving it implied, because it is the part most often discovered at renewal.

Term and renewal date third. Multi-year terms price differently from annual, and co-terminating a new purchase to an existing renewal date is usually worth more administratively than the small proration cost. Tell us the date you already have and we align to it.

What we quote

Two vendors, quoted honestly

Red Hat and SUSE are the open-source vendors with meaningful priced inventory on this catalog. Other distributions are quoted on request through authorized US distribution rather than shown as stock. Licensing and subscriptions are quoted and sourced through authorized US distribution rather than held on a shelf, so stock language does not apply to them. Naming a manufacturer describes the market, not a Uniqcli partnership or endorsement.

How you buy it

From estate list to entitlement

  • Send the host list: physical systems, sockets per host, guests per host
  • Tell us the edition and support tier your standard requires
  • Give us the existing renewal date so the new purchase co-terminates
  • Server hardware, if you need it, is quoted on the same document
  • Country of origin recorded per line; NDAA §889 screening before the quote
  • GPC / P-Card accepted up to your cardholder threshold; purchase orders otherwise
Questions

Enterprise Linux questions

Why pay for something that can be downloaded free?

You are buying the support contract, the certified errata stream and the lifecycle commitment, not the bits. For systems under an availability obligation or an audit regime, that contract is the deliverable. For systems without one, it may genuinely not be needed — and we will not pretend otherwise to sell an entitlement.

How do you count entitlements for a virtualized estate?

It depends on the edition: some cover a physical host with unlimited guests, others cover a fixed guest count, others count socket pairs. We ask for hosts, sockets and guests, state the counting assumption on the quote, and you can correct it before anything is ordered.

Can you co-terminate a new purchase with our existing renewal?

Yes, where the vendor program allows it. Send the current renewal date and we will align the term so your estate has one calendar rather than several.

Who provides the support?

The publisher, under its own terms, at the tier you purchase. We source the entitlement through authorized US distribution and record the tier on the line. We do not resell or intermediate the support relationship.
