Touch technology is the choice that follows an open-frame monitor into service, so it is worth getting right before the enclosure is built around it. Projected-capacitive (PCAP) is the modern default for a public-facing kiosk: a rigid glass front, multi-touch and gesture support, and a surface that shrugs off cleaning and abuse — it feels like a phone, which is exactly what a self-service user expects, and its sealed glass face is easy to wipe down. Its limit is that a classic PCAP surface wants a bare finger; a heavily gloved hand may not register unless the panel is specified for glove use.

Resistive touch answers the case PCAP struggles with. It registers pressure from anything — a gloved finger, a stylus, the corner of a tool — which is why it persists in industrial control, laboratory and some point-of-sale settings where the operator is rarely bare-handed. The trade is that resistive is single-touch on most panels, softer-surfaced and less scratch-resistant than glass, so it is the right choice for a controlled operator environment rather than an unattended public kiosk. Decide who touches the screen and in what state, and the touch layer chooses itself.

An open-frame display is one part of an assembly, and it is quoted as one. Behind it sits a media player, a small-form-factor PC or a machine controller that drives the video and reads the touch; around it is an enclosure sized to its chassis depth and mounting ears; and in front of it, on a public unit, is often a protective glass or an anti-glare treatment. The integration checks — video input, touch interface, mounting pattern and depth — are what decide whether the monitor drops in cleanly or forces a redesign, which is why the enclosure and the display are specified together rather than in sequence.

The lifecycle of an embedded display is longer and quieter than a desktop monitor's, and that is part of why the class exists.
