Best Switched Rack PDUs for Remote Outlet Control

The form factor is a rack-geometry decision. A 1U horizontal PDU consumes a rack unit and presents its outlets across the front or rear face — the right choice for a cabinet with U-space to spare and an outlet count in the single digits to low teens, or where the PDU needs to sit at a fixed, reachable height. It is also the simpler unit to swap, because it mounts in the same rails as everything else in the rack.

A 0U vertical PDU runs the full height of the cabinet's rear rail and does not spend a single rack unit, which is exactly what a densely populated cabinet needs: a socket beside almost every device, short cord runs, and no fight for the U-space the servers want. The trade is that a vertical unit is sized to the cabinet — a taller rack wants a taller PDU — so it is chosen with the enclosure rather than added later. For a full rack of dual-corded gear, two vertical PDUs on separate feeds is the common redundant layout.

The capability ladder is worth stating plainly because the words are easy to blur. A basic PDU distributes power and nothing more. A metered PDU adds a current reading — at the inlet on a simpler unit, at each outlet on a better one — so you can see how close a circuit runs to its breaker before it trips. A switched PDU adds the per-outlet relay that lets you cycle, sequence and disable outlets from a management page or a script. A switched-and-metered PDU does both, which is the combination most data-center capacity planning actually wants, because the same device that turns an outlet off also tells you what it was drawing.

Automatic-transfer PDUs sit slightly apart. An ATS model has two inlets fed from independent sources and switches between them fast enough that a single-corded load never notices the loss of one feed — the way to give a non-redundant server the resilience it cannot give itself, without rebuilding it with a second power supply. Where the equipment is already dual-corded, two ordinary switched PDUs on separate circuits is the simpler and usually cheaper redundant design; the ATS earns its place specifically for the single-corded exceptions.

A switched PDU is a network device, so it lives under the same discipline as the switches around it: a management address, firmware to keep current, and access control that decides who can cut power to a rack. Plan the out-of-band or management VLAN it lands on, and treat its firmware as part of the patch cycle rather than a set-and-forget appliance. A PDU is a long-lived asset that outlasts several server refreshes, and where a purchase has to satisfy sourcing rules, the same part numbers that carry the switched capability are the ones we screen for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA Section 889 status, tied to the exact SKU rather than a brand.
