XDR Platforms

An XDR platform is only as good as the sensors reporting into it. We quote the platform subscription alongside the endpoint, firewall and email licenses it correlates, and stage the appliances that carry them.

Category
Cross-source detection correlating endpoint, network and email telemetry
What we quote
Platform subscriptions plus the sensor licenses that feed them
Boundary
The detection content and the investigations remain your program
Overview

Correlation is a coverage problem before it is a software problem

XDR is sold on a simple promise: an alert on an endpoint means more when the platform can also see what the firewall logged and what arrived in the mailbox thirty seconds earlier. That promise is entirely dependent on coverage. A platform correlating three of your five telemetry sources produces a confident, partial picture — which is worse than an honest gap, because nobody goes looking for the missing half. So the buying decision is not really about the platform tier; it is about whether every sensor it expects is licensed, deployed and actually reporting. We quote it that way: the platform subscription, the endpoint and firewall and email licenses underneath it, and the appliances that have to be racked and configured before any of it produces a signal.

Before you buy

What to settle before a platform quote means anything

These are the questions that decide whether the number on the quote survives contact with the deployment.

  • Which telemetry sources are in scope — endpoint, firewall, email, identity, cloud
  • Which of those are already licensed, and on what renewal dates
  • Whether the platform tier is per device, per user or a mix of both
  • How long detections and raw telemetry have to be retained, and where
  • Whether appliances need staging and configuration before they reach site
  • Who operates the console day to day — your team, or an MSP you have engaged
Limits

What a platform purchase does not deliver

Buying XDR does not produce detections. The platform ships with vendor content, and that content has to be tuned against your environment, your exception list and your tolerance for noise — otherwise the first month generates a queue nobody works and the second month generates a rule that suppresses it. Investigation is a practice, not a feature.

We also do not sell or operate a SIEM, and we are careful not to blur the two. Where a program genuinely needs long-horizon log retention rather than vendor-managed correlation, the honest answer is storage and collection hardware, which is a different page and a different bill of materials.

We do not operate the platform after handover. The console, the policy, the tuning and the response process stay with your team or the MSP you have chosen; what we supply is the license, the hardware it runs on and the integration work that puts both into service.

Questions

XDR questions

What is the difference between EDR and XDR?

EDR watches the endpoint. XDR correlates endpoint telemetry with other sources — firewall, email, and in some products identity and cloud — so a single event can be understood in context. Commercially, XDR is usually a tier layered onto the endpoint subscription rather than a separate product, which is why the two are quoted together.

Is XDR the same as SIEM?

No. A SIEM ingests logs from anything that emits them and is bounded mostly by storage and licensing volume; XDR is a vendor-integrated set of sources with detection content shipped by that vendor. They solve overlapping problems from opposite directions. We carry priced rows for XDR platforms; we do not carry SIEM software, and we say so rather than relabeling something adjacent.

Can we buy XDR without replacing our firewalls?

Usually yes, at reduced coverage — most platforms will correlate whatever sources they support and ignore the rest. Whether that partial picture is worth the tier is a scoping decision for your team. What we can do is quote both paths honestly so the trade-off is visible before you commit.
