How to choose a Xeon processor for a server
- Start from the server's own supported-processor list, not from the part. A Xeon upgrade is keyed to a socket, a chipset generation and a firmware level; a part one generation off will not run in the board even where it physically seats. The machine's configuration guide is the document that settles it.
- Read the tier against the workload. Bronze is for I/O-bound and light general work; Silver for mainstream virtualisation; Gold covers most of the middle and upper range; Platinum is the top core-count bin. Xeon 6 is the current generation and its E-series parts trade clock for very high core counts.
- Let the licence decide cores versus clock. Per-core-licensed software makes eight fast cores cheaper to operate than sixteen slow ones; per-socket licensing pushes the other way. On most servers the software bill outweighs the processor bill, so price the licence and the part together.
- Check the TDP against the chassis. Boards and cooling are rated to a thermal ceiling, and the higher-clocked parts in every tier are the ones that exceed it. A part above the platform's rated TDP is unsupported even when it fits the socket.

- Order the heatsink and the thermal interface with the processor. A CPU upgrade kit and the cooling that goes with it are separate line items on most platforms, and the correct heatsink is specific to the chassis height and the part's TDP band.
- Plan the memory in the same change. Generation changes move the memory controller as well — DDR4 to DDR5, different channel counts, different supported speeds — so a processor upgrade that crosses a generation is a memory decision too.
Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum — and what Xeon 6 changed

An upgrade kit is a platform decision, not a component one
