Shielded Ethernet cable exists to keep a network alive next to things that generate electrical noise. How to choose shielded Ethernet cable for industrial use
- Shield the run because of what it passes, not the category you want. A cable near a variable-frequency drive, a large motor, a welder or a contactor picks up their field as noise; a foil or braid shield gives that noise a path to ground. Shielding, not a faster category, is what keeps the link clean in high EMI — every cable here states its shielding.
- Bond the shield at both ends, or it does nothing. A shielded cable terminated into an unshielded jack, panel or connector has no continuous drain path and gives you the cost of a shield with none of the benefit.
