Copper Ethernet stops at 100 meters. Past that — between two buildings, across a plant floor, down a tunnel, or anywhere the run crosses a ground-potential difference or a source of electrical noise — the link has to go optical, and a media converter is the smallest way to do it: RJ-45 in on one side, fiber out on the other, with no switch to configure and no rack to fill.
