Thirty-two gigabytes on one stick is the size at which memory buying stops being a shopping decision and becomes a compatibility one. The number on the box is the least specific thing about the part: the same capacity is sold as a registered server module, an unbuffered ECC module for a workstation, a plain non-ECC desktop DIMM and a notebook SODIMM, and those four are not substitutes for one another in any direction. A machine that wants registered memory will not post on unbuffered sticks, and a desktop board will not post on registered ones.
This page is fenced on single modules for a practical reason. A great deal of what is sold as "32GB" in this category is a kit of two 16 GB sticks, which is the right answer when a machine has slots to spare and the wrong one when it does not — a two-slot notebook already carrying a pair has nowhere to put a kit, and a server being populated to a channel map wants one module per slot at a known rank. How to choose a 32GB memory module
- Start from the machine, not the module: the server, workstation or notebook's own documentation names the generation, the maximum module size, the module type and the population rules, and every one of those can rule a part out on its own.
- Match the module type exactly — registered (RDIMM), load-reduced (LRDIMM), unbuffered ECC or plain non-ECC. These titles state which, and a platform that requires one will not post on another; this is the single most common failed upgrade in this category.
- Check the form factor and pin count against the slot: 240-pin and 288-pin DIMMs for desktops, workstations and servers, 260-pin and 262-pin SODIMMs for notebooks and small-form-factor machines. There is no adapter for this.
- Read the speed grade as a ceiling, not a promise. A module rated above the platform's supported speed runs at the platform's speed, and mixing grades across a set generally settles at the slowest part — buy the grade the machine supports rather than the fastest one listed.
- Watch rank and channel population on servers and workstations. Single-rank, dual-rank and quad-rank parts are all present on this shelf, and a platform's supported speed frequently drops as ranks per channel rise, which is a documented behaviour rather than a defect.
- Decide one module or a kit before you order: a kit of two 16 GB sticks fills two slots for the same capacity, which is either exactly what you want for dual-channel population or exactly what you cannot afford in a two-slot notebook.
- Where the purchase order names TAA, read it on the part number — it appears in the product data of specific modules here and is a per-part fact, never a family or brand rule.
- Standardize on one part number per machine model across a fleet so spares, the upgrade procedure and the eventual second wave are one decision instead of many.
Four module types, and why the wrong one simply will not work
Registered memory puts a register between the controller and the DRAM chips so a server can address far more modules per channel than a desktop board can; load-reduced memory extends the same idea with a buffer that further reduces the electrical load, which is why the quad-rank high-capacity parts here are titled LRDIMM. Unbuffered ECC sits in the middle: the error correction is present, the register is not, and it is what a great many workstations and entry servers actually take. Plain non-ECC unbuffered memory is what a desktop or notebook uses, and DDR5 adds a wrinkle worth knowing — on-die ECC is a chip-level protection against internal errors and is not the same thing as the end-to-end ECC a server platform reports to the operating system. The titles on this page distinguish all of these, and the distinction is not a preference: it is whether the machine posts.
Capacity per slot is the other half. A platform's maximum memory is a product of module size, slots and the population rules for the ranks involved, and 32 GB is often the largest module an older workstation will accept even though it has four slots. That is exactly why the single-module fence on this page matters — it is the part that lets you count what you are adding. Where a machine is already full, the upgrade is a swap rather than an addition, and the removed modules are worth planning for: matched sticks pulled from a fleet refresh are frequently the cheapest spares that estate will ever have.
Module makers, compatible memory and what each is for

Compatible-memory specialists list parts against the OEM part number they replace, which is what you want when a machine is out of its original supply window and the exact original module is no longer orderable at a sensible price; those titles name the OEM number they are built against, and several carry a lifetime warranty in the title.
Neither is automatically the right answer, and price alone is a poor way to choose between them. For a server under an active support contract, check what the support terms say about third-party memory before the order goes in — it is a two-minute question that occasionally changes the answer. For an out-of-warranty machine, a compatible module against the OEM number is often the only sensible route back to a full memory map. - Is a 32GB module the same as a 32GB kit?
- No, and the difference decides whether the upgrade fits. A 32 GB module is one stick that occupies one slot; a 32 GB kit is usually two 16 GB sticks that occupy two. Every row on this page is a single module, as stated in the manufacturer's own title, because that is what a buyer counting free slots needs. A kit is the better answer when a machine has empty slots and benefits from populating two channels at once; the single module is the answer when slots are scarce, when a server is being populated to a channel map, or when a two-slot notebook already has both slots filled and the upgrade has to be a straight swap.
- What is the difference between RDIMM, LRDIMM and UDIMM?

- Sometimes, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. The module type, generation and voltage must match, the platform's population rules have to allow the resulting arrangement, and the set will generally run at the slowest speed grade present — so a fast new module beside older sticks buys capacity rather than speed. On servers and workstations, mixing ranks across a channel can also lower the supported speed. - Does a higher-speed module make the machine faster?
- Only up to what the platform supports. A module rated above the processor and board's supported speed runs at the supported speed, so paying for a higher grade buys nothing on that machine — and on server platforms the effective speed can drop further as ranks per channel increase, which is documented behaviour rather than a fault.
