A hundred and twenty-eight gigabytes on one stick is the top of most memory ceilings, and it is bought for a reason rather than for headroom. It is what a hypervisor needs when the guest count has outgrown the host count, what an in-memory database wants when the working set stopped fitting, and what a workstation reaches for when a simulation, a point cloud or a stack of virtual machines has to stay resident. At that capacity the type on the label decides more than the badge does, and every row on this page states 128GB in the manufacturer's own catalog title, so nothing here is a smaller module reframed as a large one.
The first fork is single module versus kit, and the titles say which shape a part is. A single 1 x 128GB stick is the part that fills one more slot in a machine whose configuration is already known and already working; a 128GB kit — commonly 4 x 32GB, sometimes 2 x 64GB or 8 x 16GB — is four or eight modules matched and sold together to populate empty channels in one pass. They are not interchangeable purchases. Buying a kit for a machine with one free slot leaves three sticks in a drawer; buying one high-capacity stick for a board that wanted a matched set can leave the channels unbalanced.
The second fork is the module type, and it is where a large memory order most often goes wrong. Load-reduced (LRDIMM) and registered (RDIMM) modules put a buffer between the memory controller and the chips so a server can carry many high-capacity sticks per channel without the electrical load collapsing, and they run only in boards that expect them. Unbuffered modules are what most workstation and desktop platforms take, and a 128GB unbuffered DDR5 kit is a different purchase entirely from a 128GB octal-rank LRDIMM. Read the DDR generation, the speed grade and the rank the same way — memory negotiates down to the slowest supported setting, and rank is what decides how many modules a channel will accept. Send the exact server, workstation or motherboard model and the modules can be matched against that platform's own qualified-list rules rather than against a spec sheet alone.

How to choose a 128GB memory module
- Confirm the platform addresses 128GB per slot before anything else. Plenty of boards top out at 32GB or 64GB modules no matter how many slots are free; the per-slot ceiling is a property of the memory controller and the board, and a 128GB stick is wasted in a platform that will not see it.
- Read the module type on the row. Load-reduced and registered modules run only in server and workstation boards built for them; an unbuffered 128GB kit runs in a desktop-class platform. The titles here name the type per part, and it is the specification that most often sends an order back.
- Decide single module versus kit deliberately. A 1 x 128GB stick adds capacity to a known, working configuration; a 128GB kit of four or eight matched modules is the safer way to fill empty channels at once. The titles state the shape, and the two are not substitutes for each other.
- Match the DDR generation and speed to the platform, not to the biggest number on the page. Memory clocks at the slowest supported grade across the channel, so a DDR4-3200 module in a DDR4-2666 board runs at 2666 — buy the speed the board can actually use.
- Mind rank and total load when several slots are populated. Octal-rank and load-reduced modules exist precisely so many can share a channel; exceeding the board's supported load, or mixing ranks it does not expect, is how a fully-populated server refuses to post.
- Do not mix a new stick blindly with what is installed. Server and workstation platforms are particular about running unlike modules together; where a machine is already partly populated, match the existing part number or repopulate the channel as a set.
- Where the purchase order names TAA, read the designation on the part number. Some of these modules carry TAA Compliant in the manufacturer's own title and others in the same family do not — it is a per-part fact to confirm on the exact row you order, never a property of the brand.
LRDIMM, RDIMM and unbuffered: the buffer is the whole difference
A registered module puts a register between the memory controller and the address and command lines, so the controller drives one load per module instead of one per chip. A load-reduced module goes further and buffers the data lines as well, which is what lets a server hang eight or more high-capacity sticks off a channel and still clock them. That buffering is why almost every 128GB module in this catalogue is an LRDIMM or a high-rank RDIMM — at this capacity the chip count per stick is large enough that an unbuffered design would not hold up electrically in a server board. It is also why the type is not a preference: a board that expects registered memory will not post with unbuffered sticks, and a desktop board will not post with registered ones.
The rank on the row is the second half of the same story. An octal-rank 128GB LRDIMM presents eight ranks to the controller; a quad-rank part presents four. Boards publish a maximum supported rank count per channel, and it falls as the slots fill — which is why a server that runs two 128GB sticks per channel happily may refuse three. Where the machine is being taken to its full memory configuration rather than topped up, the safest reading is the platform's own memory population table: it states how many of which rank go where, in which order, and it is a rule about the board rather than about the module.
The kit is a different purchase from the stick
A 128GB kit is a set of matched modules — 4 x 32GB and 8 x 16GB are the common shapes here, with a 2 x 64GB kit appearing on older DDR3 platforms — binned and sold together so they populate a set of channels as one unit. On a workstation being built or rebuilt, that is exactly what is wanted: the channels fill in one pass, the modules are known to be alike, and there is no question of mixing generations. The consumer-lineage DDR5 kits on this page are that shape, and their titles name the XMP or EXPO profile they carry, which is what makes them a motherboard purchase rather than a server one.
A single 1 x 128GB stick is the opposite case. It goes into a machine whose configuration is already known — a server with free slots and a documented population order, or a workstation being lifted one step. It is the right buy when the existing modules are staying, and the wrong one when the board wanted a matched set across its channels. - Can any server take a 128GB memory module?
