A wall-mount rack is what you buy when there is no floor to give up: a branch office comms cupboard, a classroom, a retail back room, a plant-floor corner, a riser closet on a floor that was never designed to have one. The decision is not really about the rack — it is about depth. Almost everything else on this page can be worked around after the fact; a body that is four inches too shallow for the equipment cannot, and it is the single most common reason a wall rack is ordered twice.
There are three bodies here and they are different products. An open bracket rack is a pair of vertical rails on a wall plate: cheap, quick, unenclosed, and the right answer for a patch panel, a small switch and nothing else. A 2-post open-frame wall rack adds depth and load capacity while staying open, which suits a closet that is already lockable and needs airflow more than it needs a door. An enclosed cabinet adds a lockable door, side panels and a defined thermal path, and it is what to specify anywhere the closet is shared, public-facing or dusty. Several of the enclosures swing or pivot away from the wall on a hinge, which is the only practical way to reach the back of a populated wall rack — worth choosing deliberately, because the alternative is unracking equipment to change a cable.

A rack-mount server is a deep, heavy, hot device: it needs a deep cabinet, a load rating that carries it and airflow the closet can actually supply, and most shallow wall racks are built for switches and patch panels rather than for servers. How to choose a wall-mount rack
- Measure depth first, and measure the deepest thing going in it — including the cable bend radius and the power cords behind it, not just the chassis. Switch-depth wall racks and server-depth wall racks are different products, and the rows name their depth.
- Count the U height for what goes in plus what is coming: the equipment, the patch panel, a rack PDU and a blanking or brush panel, then leave spare U. A wall rack that is full on day one is a second purchase order.
- Read the weight capacity on the row against the real load. These rows state their maximum weight capacity, and the figures across this page range from tens of pounds on a bracket to hundreds on a cabinet — a stack of switches, a small UPS and a patch panel adds up faster than people expect.
- Choose the body for the room: an open bracket for a patch panel and a switch in a room that is already secure, a 2-post open frame where airflow matters more than a door, an enclosed lockable cabinet where the space is shared, public-facing or dusty.
- Specify rear access deliberately. A swinging or pivoting body lets the whole rack hinge off the wall to reach the back — on a fixed rack in a tight closet, changing a cable at the rear can mean unracking the equipment in front of it.
- Treat the wall itself as part of the specification. The fixings that come with a rack suit some wall types and not others, and a loaded cabinet on plasterboard needs backing or a stud line — confirm the mounting with whoever is installing it before the order, not on the day.
- Plan the heat and the power with the rack. A closed cabinet in a small unventilated room concentrates whatever the equipment produces; fans, vented doors and where the rack PDU goes are decisions to make at purchase rather than after the first thermal shutdown.
- Where the purchase order names TAA, read it on the part number: many of these racks carry TAA Compliant in the manufacturer's own title and others do not, including neighbouring sizes in the same family.
Depth is the specification everything else follows
Wall racks are sold on U height because that is the number people know, and they fail on depth because that is the number nobody measures. A 19-inch rack-mount switch is shallow; a 1U server is not, and neither is a rack-mount UPS. Usable depth is the internal figure minus the door, minus the cable management, minus the bend radius of everything plugged into the back — which is why a cabinet advertised at 22 inches can be tight for a device specified at 20. The honest approach is to take the deepest device on the equipment list, add several inches for cabling and airflow, and then read the rack's own depth figure against that total. Where the answer is marginal, the fix is a deeper cabinet or a hinged body that swings clear of the wall, not a shoehorn.
The corollary is that a shallow wall rack is not a bad product — it is a switch-and-patch-panel product. A great deal of branch and classroom infrastructure is exactly that, and a shallow enclosure that closes neatly on a switch, a panel and a small power strip is a better answer than a deep cabinet that dominates the room. The mistake is only ever buying the shallow one for the deep job.
Closed, open, and the heat that decides between them
An enclosed wall cabinet buys security and tidiness, and it also traps heat: everything the equipment produces stays inside a small box on a wall in a room that usually has no cooling of its own. Vented or perforated doors, a fan kit and honest airflow planning are what make it work, along with blanking panels so that the air that leaves the equipment does not simply circulate back into it. An open-frame wall rack has none of that problem and none of the security either, which is why the choice is really about the room: a locked comms cupboard can take an open frame, a corridor or a classroom cannot.
Power belongs in the same conversation. A wall rack with a rack PDU or a small UPS in it is the normal case, and both add weight and heat to the figures above — so size the load rating and the airflow with them included rather than adding them later.
