A charging cart is a piece of classroom furniture that happens to contain a power distribution problem. It has to hold a class set of devices, charge all of them overnight without tripping a 15-amp circuit, survive being pushed between rooms by whoever is nearest, lock, and let a teacher hand out thirty machines in the two minutes before a lesson starts. The specification that matters most is not the device count on the box — it is whether the bays fit the machines you actually own, and whether the shelves let a student take one out without unplugging three others.
The first real decision is the charging method. AC carts give every bay a standard outlet and let you use the manufacturer's own power brick, which means one cart handles a mixed fleet of laptops, Chromebooks and anything else that arrives — at the cost of storing thirty adapters. USB-C carts, including the pre-wired models here that ship with 65 W adapters already installed, are neater and faster to hand out, but every device has to charge over USB-C at a wattage the cart supplies, so a fleet with a barrel-plug laptop in it is a fleet the cart cannot fully serve. How to choose a classroom charging cart
- Size the cart to the class, then add headroom. A 30-device cart for a class of 28 has no room for spares, loaners or the machines that come back mid-day; the 32, 36, 42 and 45-device models here exist because a 1:1 program never has exactly one device per seat.
- Decide AC or USB-C from the fleet, not the brochure. AC bays take each device's own adapter and cope with a mixed or inherited fleet; pre-wired USB-C carts are faster to hand out and tidier but only serve devices that charge over USB-C at the wattage supplied. One barrel-plug laptop model in the fleet decides this question for you.
- Measure the devices before the bays. Bay depth and shelf pitch decide what fits, and a cart that will not close on a 15.6-inch machine with a case on it is a cart that gets left open. - Check the electrical draw against the room. AC bays, USB-C bays and pre-wired carts
The charging architecture is the decision that ages worst if you get it wrong. An AC cart is a rolling power strip with bays: each device brings its own adapter, so a cart bought for one generation of Chromebooks still works for the laptops that replace them, and a mixed fleet is not a problem. What you pay is storage — thirty bricks and thirty cables live in the cart — and handout time, because a device and its adapter have to be separated cleanly. USB-C changes the trade. A pre-wired USB-C cart ships with adapters already installed in every bay, so a student pulls out a device and a cable stays behind — faster, tidier, and much less to lose. A fleet that is uniformly USB-C should look hard at these; a fleet with any barrel-plug machine in it should stay on AC until that machine retires.
Running a cart fleet across a school year
Carts fail in predictable ways, and most of them are avoidable at purchase. Cables are the first wear item — buy spares as consumables rather than raising a ticket per broken cord. Casters are the second, because a cart pushed over a threshold strip four times a day with a full class set on it works its wheels hard; the 5-inch casters on the heavier carts here are there for that reason.
