Unmanned edge cabinets — branch offices, retail back rooms, remote closets — justify switched units, because a remote per-outlet reboot recovers a hung device without dispatching anyone. Where staff are on-site but cabinets are filling up, the priority shifts to seeing real per-phase current, so load can be balanced before a breaker is stressed, which is where metered units earn their keep.

Facilities that want central alerting and environmental visibility, but not per-outlet switching they will never use, are the natural home for monitored and RackLink-networked units feeding a dashboard. A rack breaker should carry no more than about 80 percent of its rating as a continuous load, so a 20-amp circuit plans to roughly 16 usable amps and a 30-amp circuit to about 24. Total the nameplate draw — and better, the measured draw — of everything in the cabinet, then confirm the sum sits under that ceiling with room for the next switch or server you add.

For dual-corded equipment, put the A and B feeds on separate PDUs and separate upstream circuits, so either side can carry the full load if one drops — which means neither side should run past its own headroom in normal operation. On three-phase input, spread the high-draw devices across phases and let a metered or switched unit report per-phase current, so an imbalance surfaces on the dashboard before it becomes a nuisance trip.

The clearest return on an intelligent PDU is the site visit it avoids. A single remote reboot of a frozen device at an unmanned location can offset a meaningful share of the unit's value by removing one after-hours truck roll, and switched outlets let a help desk cycle power safely with no technician on the floor. Metering delivers a quieter return by heading off the overload trips that would otherwise take a whole cabinet down at once.

Networked units also fold into existing monitoring, so draw and alerts land in the same tooling as the rest of the rack — useful when you are documenting utilization for a capacity plan or a facilities review.
