The intelligence tier should track how the space is run. A lights-out cage benefits from switched or MSPO units so a remote hand can power-cycle a hung device or stage a new server without a site visit, while a closet a technician passes daily may only need monitored current readings. Mapping the tier to how often people actually touch the rack keeps you from over-buying capability nobody uses or under-buying past a monitoring requirement.

Treat a PDU deployment as a fleet exercise, not a cabinet-by-cabinet purchase. Lock the input plug, phase and branch rating to your electrical drawings first, then standardize one intelligence tier across the row so the monitoring data stays uniform. Every intelligent unit needs an RJ-45 drop, so plan the management VLAN, IP scheme and any DCIM or gateway integration before install — that way the cabinets come online reporting load on day one.

Balance load across phases and across the A and B feeds as you populate outlets, not afterward. An unbalanced three-phase unit strands capacity and complicates the redundancy math. Keep the 80% continuous-load derate as genuine headroom rather than reserve you intend to consume, so a failover onto a single feed during maintenance or an outage doesn't trip a branch breaker and take the cabinet down.

The purchase price is the smallest line in a rack PDU's working life. Per-outlet metering on MSPO models pays back by exposing stranded capacity — power you've provisioned but aren't drawing — so you can defer new-circuit or new-cabinet spend. Remote outlet switching removes truck rolls for reboots and staging, and uniform monitoring shortens the time to find an overloaded circuit before it trips. Weigh those operational savings against the tier premium.

Plan for a multi-year service life. Intelligent PDUs receive firmware updates, and standardizing on one SmartZone generation keeps management tooling, spares and technician training consistent across refresh cycles. Where a row mixes G5 and G6 generations, budget the extra tooling overhead that split creates. Matching the generation to the fleet you already run is usually cheaper over time than mixing platforms to chase a marginal per-unit saving.
