Ubiquiti's UniFi access points are popular for business Wi-Fi because a single self-hosted or cloud controller manages the whole estate with no per-AP licensing — a real operating-cost difference at scale versus subscription-licensed enterprise Wi-Fi. The trade-off is that you design and run the network yourself, so AP selection and placement matter more than with a hand-held managed service.
Pick the model by density and environment: standard indoor APs (U6/U7 Pro, Lite) for offices, high-density APs for auditoriums and lecture halls, and hardened outdoor/mesh units for yards, warehouses and courtyards. All are PoE-powered, so plan switch PoE budget and cabling alongside the APs. The UniFi access points below are the models Uniqcli currently stocks.
Buyer's checklist
How to choose a UniFi access point
- Match the AP to expected client density — standard indoor APs for offices; high-density models for auditoriums, classrooms and event spaces.
- Choose Wi-Fi 6/6E for most current fleets; Wi-Fi 7 where you have the client devices and backhaul to use it.
- Use outdoor-rated (and mesh-capable) APs for yards, warehouses and covered outdoor areas.
- Budget PoE: confirm your switches supply the PoE standard and wattage each AP needs (802.3af/at/bt).
- Plan the controller (self-hosted Cloud Key/host or UniFi cloud) — it's required to manage and update the fleet.
- Cable to spec (Cat6 minimum for multi-gig APs) so the AP isn't bottlenecked at the uplink.
Where UniFi access points fit
A UniFi deployment scales cleanly from a single-suite office to a multi-building campus, and the model mix usually follows the floor plan. Standard indoor APs cover private offices, clinics and branch sites; high-density units handle the concurrency spikes of lecture halls, training rooms and event spaces at class-change or session start; and outdoor-rated, mesh-capable APs extend coverage to loading yards, courtyards and building perimeters where running fresh cable is impractical.
Warehouses and logistics floors are a distinct case: handheld scanners and voice-picking headsets need consistent roaming across racking that absorbs signal, so density and placement matter more than headline throughput. Guest-facing spaces — lobbies, retail, hospitality — lean on the controller's VLAN and SSID segmentation to keep public traffic off the corporate network. Map the environment to the AP class before counting units, because construction and client type drive the design far more than square footage.
Planning the rollout
Decide the controller architecture first, since every AP adopts to it: a self-hosted Cloud Key or dedicated host keeps management on-premises, while the hosted option removes that server from your estate. Either way, pair the APs with PoE switching that has the wattage headroom and port count for the fleet plus a little growth, and plan SSID-to-VLAN mapping, channel width and firmware policy before the first unit goes on the ceiling, so adoption is a rollout step rather than a scramble.
For mesh and outdoor links, treat wireless uplink as a fallback, not the plan — a wired backhaul to each AP keeps throughput predictable, and only the last hop should rely on mesh where cable genuinely can't reach. Stage adoption and firmware updates on a handful of units before the full push, and document the channel and power plan so a later addition doesn't quietly re-tune the whole floor.
Total cost of ownership
The access point is only part of the spend. Each unit consumes a PoE port and a slice of the switch's power budget, so a large fleet can trigger a switch upgrade that belongs in the same project. Structured cabling to multi-gig spec, a controller to host, and a small pool of spare APs round out the hardware, while the self-managed model trades recurring license fees for in-house time to design, monitor and update the network.
Refresh cadence is worth planning early. A new Wi-Fi generation lands every few years, but a client fleet of laptops, phones and scanners adopts it slowly, so the newest AP standard can sit largely idle until devices catch up. Buying to the density and standard your fleet can actually use today — not the newest available — keeps the refresh honest. Screening and documentation are handled at sourcing: every unit is checked for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status against its specific part number before checkout.
FAQ
Common questions
- Do Ubiquiti access points require a subscription?
- No — UniFi APs are managed by a UniFi controller (self-hosted on a Cloud Key or your own host, or via Ubiquiti's cloud) with no recurring per-AP licensing. That no-license model is a major reason organizations choose UniFi over subscription-licensed enterprise Wi-Fi, though you take on running the controller yourself.
- How many access points do I need?
- It depends on client density and construction, not just square footage — a drywall office needs far fewer APs than a warehouse with racking or a school at class-change. As a rough starting point, plan one standard AP per ~25–30 concurrent devices in offices and step up to high-density models for auditoriums; a proper site survey refines placement.
- Can UniFi gear be purchased for a public-sector network?
- Every line Uniqcli quotes is sourced through authorized distribution and screened for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status before checkout — with documentation tied to the specific part number, not a product family.
