A card reader is the least interesting device on a government desk and the one that stops work when it is missing. The Common Access Card is the Department of Defense's own identity credential and the Personal Identity Verification card is its civilian-agency counterpart; both are contact smart cards, both carry the certificates that a Windows sign-in, a signed email or an access-controlled application asks for, and neither of them does anything without something to read the chip. How to choose a CAC or smart card reader for a fleet
- Start with contact versus contactless, because they are not substitutes. Certificate-based sign-in with a CAC or PIV card needs the chip read, and that is a contact reader with a slot. Contactless readers serve badge-tap use cases at shared workstations, print release and attendance terminals — useful, and a different job.
