Windows 11 Business Desktops and Mini PCs

The case for the small box on a desk refresh is not novelty, it is standardization. A mini or small-form-factor machine mounts behind the display or under the counter, uses a fraction of a tower's power, ships in a smaller box and is far quicker to swap when one fails. Across a floor of office, reception, counter and administrative seats — which is most of a typical estate — none of the things a tower offers is actually being used, and the tower's footprint is paid for in desk space and electricity every day for five years.

The seats that still want a tower are the ones with a real expansion requirement: discrete graphics for design or modeling work, several internal drives, a capture or interface card, or a workload that genuinely needs a desktop-class processor at sustained load. Those are worth identifying by name rather than by department, because a floor plan that assumes towers everywhere buys a lot of empty slots.

There is a third answer that is neither, and it is worth naming honestly: if the applications a seat uses already run in the data center or in a hosted desktop, a thin client is the cheaper endpoint and a different guide. Buy a desktop when the machine does the work; buy a thin client when the machine is a window onto work happening somewhere else.

The ESU side of a refresh decision is published and fixed. The replacement side is not, and it moved hard this year. TrendForce reported conventional DRAM contract prices up 58–63% quarter over quarter and NAND up 70–75% in the second quarter of 2026, and in guidance published July 3, 2026 projected a further 13–18% on DRAM and 10–15% on NAND in the third quarter as AI server demand kept supply tight. Gartner's full-year 2026 forecast has DRAM up 125% and NAND up 234%.

For a desk refresh that has two practical consequences. The first is ordering shape: a floor bought as one quantity now and the same floor bought in four tranches over the coming year are no longer close to the same number, and a quote with a dated lead time is worth more than a rolling purchase habit. The second is configuration: buy the memory and the storage on the original order, especially on mini and NUC-class units where the memory may be soldered and the decision is permanent.

None of that changes the underlying answer for a machine that cannot meet the Windows 11 baseline — that machine is still going to be replaced, and bridging it with Extended Security Updates for a third year at a doubled fee is rarely the cheaper road. It changes when you commit, not whether.
