How to choose an enterprise drive
- Match the interface first — 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA are different electrical worlds, and an array built on SAS should be replaced and expanded with SAS.
- Match the form factor to the bay: 2.5-inch small form factor and 3.5-inch large form factor drives are not interchangeable without a certified carrier.
- Choose flash or spinning disk by workload: SSDs for databases, virtualization and anything latency-sensitive; high-capacity HDDs for backup targets, archives and bulk storage.
- For OEM servers, compatible enterprise drives matched to the platform are how a fleet keeps its arrays serviceable after the OEM's own part goes end-of-sale — match against the server model, not just the specs.
- Buy the rebuild spare with the original set — a RAID group standardized on one drive should have at least one cold spare on the shelf.
- Sanitize and document at retirement: enterprise drives leave service with data on them, and the disposal plan is part of the purchase decision for regulated environments.
SSD or spinning disk, decided by the workload
The split is no longer about price alone. Enterprise SSDs have taken the tiers where latency and mixed random workloads dominate — virtualization hosts, databases, VDI, caching layers — and their endurance ratings are written for sustained writes rather than consumer duty cycles. High-capacity enterprise HDDs hold the tiers where the metric is cost per terabyte at scale: backup targets, surveillance retention, archives and bulk file stores. Enterprise drives are rated for continuous operation, carry endurance and workload ratings written for server duty, and their firmware is tuned to report errors quickly so a RAID controller can act — where a desktop drive will retry silently for long enough to get dropped from an array. - Can I mix drive brands or models inside one RAID array?
