Buying for an organization or for yourself — both work. No payment up front.
A KVM switch is bought for one of three very different jobs, and the wrong one is expensive in a way that is obvious the day it arrives. There is the operator desk that has to reach two or more systems from one keyboard, monitor and mouse — the classic secure-government case, where the point of the switch is that the systems stay separated. There is the rack, where a single console has to reach a row of servers without a monitor and keyboard per machine. And there is remote work on a machine nobody is standing next to, which is a KVM-over-IP problem rather than a switching one. This grid holds all three shapes, and the prices reflect that spread — a small desktop switch costs a fraction of the largest rackmount appliance, and the live card under each model is the figure to trust.
The Avocent and Cybex lines listed here divide along those jobs. Cybex is the secure desktop family — a substantial share of the switches in this category carry "secure" in their product titles, and the certified models are titled NIAP version 4.0 Certified, which is the certification version the current product data names. The SC800 series is the universal DisplayPort tier, with product data listing support up to 4K60, and the SCKM100 models are KM switches that list a dedicated peripheral port. Alongside them sit the Avocent classics: SwitchView desktop KM switches in two- and four-port versions, the AV100 eight-port analog rackmount KVM with on-screen display, and the IPIQ KVM-over-IP device for VGA remote access. Several models' product data also lists TAA compliance — a per-part fact worth confirming on the part number you actually order. This grid is drawn from the KVM switches Uniqcli currently stocks, with live availability on each card.
Buyer's checklist
How to choose a KVM switch
- Decide the shape before the specification: secure desktop KVM at the operator's desk, a KM switch where each system keeps its own display, a rackmount analog KVM in the cabinet, or KVM over IP for a machine nobody is standing next to. They are not substitutes for one another.
- Where the requirement is switching between systems at different classification levels from one desk, buy from the models whose product data names NIAP version 4.0 certification — and confirm the exact part number against the current published certification list before ordering, because certification is granted per model and per version.
- Count ports against the systems on that desk today plus the one you know is coming. A two-port switch that becomes a three-system desk is a full re-buy, not an upgrade.
- Match the video connector and resolution to the actual workstations, not to the newest model: the SC800 series is listed as universal DisplayPort up to 4K60, while the older AV100 rackmount and IPIQ over-IP devices are VGA-era hardware for VGA-era consoles.
- Confirm which peripherals a given secure model accepts before you order the desk set — the SCKM100 KM switches list a dedicated peripheral port, and peripheral handling is exactly the detail that differs model to model in this family.
- Where TAA compliance is a line item in the requirement, check it on the part number: several models' product data lists it, and it is a per-part fact rather than a property of the family.
Secure desktop, KM, rackmount or over-IP
The four shapes in this category answer four different questions. A secure desktop KVM is for the workstation that reaches more than one system while those systems stay isolated from each other — one keyboard, one monitor, one mouse, and a switch whose whole design premise is that data does not cross between the attached machines. A KM switch is the same desk problem minus the display: each system keeps its own monitor and the switch moves only keyboard and mouse, which is what a multi-screen analyst desk usually actually wants. A rackmount analog KVM, such as the eight-port AV100 with its on-screen display, is the cabinet answer — one console reaching a row of servers, no per-machine peripherals, no network dependency. KVM over IP, such as the VGA-era IPIQ device, is the odd one out: it is not really about switching at all but about reaching a machine's console from somewhere else, including while the operating system is down. Buy for the question in front of you; a rack device on a desk and a desktop switch in a cabinet are both common and both wrong.
What to confirm before a secure-desk order
Secure KVM orders fail on details that have nothing to do with the switch's headline capability. Start with the certification: the product data on the certified models names NIAP version 4.0, and because certification is issued per model and per protection-profile version, the part number you order is the fact that matters — check it against the current published list rather than against a family name or an older quote. Then work outward from the desk. Confirm the video connector on every attached system, since a DisplayPort-era switch and a VGA-era console need an adapter path that a secure model may or may not permit. Confirm the peripheral set, because the keyboard and mouse a secure switch will accept is a narrower list than the ones on the shelf. Confirm the port count against the systems that will be on that desk after the next reorganization. And confirm TAA compliance on the part number where the requirement names it. Send the desk layout — systems, connectors, resolutions and quantities — and we will confirm the model, availability and lead time together before anything is committed.
FAQ
Common questions
- What is the difference between a KVM switch and a KM switch?
- A KVM switch moves keyboard, video and mouse together: one monitor shows whichever system is selected. A KM switch moves only keyboard and mouse, and every attached system keeps its own display permanently lit — you move between them the way you move between monitors on one machine. Desks that already have two or three screens and want all of them visible at once want the KM shape; desks with one monitor and several systems want the KVM shape. Both exist in this category, including the Avocent SwitchView two- and four-port KM switches and the Cybex SCKM100 line.
- What does the NIAP version 4.0 marking in these product titles mean?
- It is the version of the peripheral-sharing protection profile the product data names for that model, and a number of the switches here are titled that way. Certification is granted to a specific model against a specific version, so it is read on the part number, never inferred from the family or from an older document. Whether a given desk configuration satisfies a particular program's requirements is a decision for that program's security authority, not something a product marking settles; the practical step is to confirm the exact part against the current published certification list, then confirm the desk's connectors and peripherals against that model.
- Can business, government and education buyers order these?
- Every line Uniqcli quotes is sourced through authorized distribution and screened for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status before checkout — with documentation tied to the specific part number, not a product family.
