A UPS is bought once and judged for years, usually on a day nobody planned for. Most of the Vertiv range here carries the Liebert name, and it splits by topology into two answers to two different problems. Vertiv lists the Liebert GXT5 as a true online double-conversion design in rack/tower form, which rebuilds the waveform continuously rather than switching to battery when the utility misbehaves. On the line-interactive side, the Liebert PSI5 line pairs automatic voltage regulation with a 0.9 power factor and pure sine wave output on battery per the product data, with rack/tower convertible builds in part of the range — and the PowerUPS 200 entry line sits below it, line-interactive with AVR, user-replaceable batteries and NEMA outlets, with a three-year warranty cited in the titles.
The choice between those families is the whole decision, and it is made by what is plugged in rather than by the price column. A network closet full of switches, access points, a small NAS and a couple of workstations is line-interactive territory: AVR corrects the sags and swells that make up most real power events, and the battery is there for the short outage and the clean shutdown. Servers, storage, anything with an active power-factor-corrected supply, and any load that has already tripped on a transfer belong on online double-conversion, where there is no transfer to fail. The grid below is sorted price-ascending, so it opens on the PowerUPS entry units and climbs through the Liebert families from there. This grid is drawn from the Vertiv UPS systems Uniqcli currently stocks, with live availability on each card.
Buyer's checklist
How to choose a Vertiv UPS
- Pick the topology before the size: line-interactive (Liebert PSI5, PowerUPS 200) for closets, edge cabinets and workstations; online double-conversion (Liebert GXT5) for servers, storage and anything sensitive to a transfer.
- Size in watts as well as VA — the watt rating is the one modern IT loads exhaust first, and a UPS chosen on VA alone can be undersized on day one. Add headroom for what gets plugged in next year.
- Count and match the outlets to the actual cords: the PowerUPS 200 titles name NEMA outlets, and a rack of C13/C14-corded gear is a different order than a pair of desktop workstations.
- Decide rack, tower or convertible early. The GXT5 is listed rack/tower and part of the PSI5 range is convertible — then check rack depth and confirm rails and mounting hardware are on the order rather than assumed.
- Treat runtime as a requirement, not a spec line: state whether the unit only has to ride through blips or hold the load through a graceful shutdown, then check that model's own options for extended battery and shutdown software.
- Read the coverage and monitoring line on the exact model — the PSI5 titles cite optional remote monitoring and three-year total coverage, the PowerUPS 200 titles cite a three-year warranty. Both are per-part-number facts, not range-wide rules.
Line-interactive or online double-conversion
Line-interactive units run the load off utility power and use automatic voltage regulation to correct the sags and swells that make up the overwhelming majority of power events, switching to battery only when the supply actually fails. That is the right answer for network closets, edge cabinets, access-layer switches, small NAS boxes and workstations — the equipment is tolerant of a brief transfer, and the money saved goes into runtime instead. Online double-conversion, which Vertiv lists for the Liebert GXT5, takes the incoming supply to DC and rebuilds it, so the load never sees the utility directly and there is no transfer to fail. That matters for servers, storage arrays, and any site where the incoming power is already known to be poor — generator sites, older buildings, remote facilities. When a load has nuisance-tripped on a line-interactive unit before, the answer is usually a topology change rather than a bigger battery.
Sizing, runtime and the rack it has to fit
Sizing goes wrong in two familiar ways. The first is VA-only math: modern power supplies push the watt rating to the limit long before the VA rating, so add up the real wattage of what is plugged in, then leave headroom for the growth that arrives without a purchase order. The second is treating runtime as a published number rather than a decision — a UPS that rides through blips and a UPS that holds a rack until a generator picks up are different purchases, and where extended battery capacity or shutdown software is needed, check the options listed against that specific model rather than assuming the range carries them. Physical fit is the last trap: rack depth, the rails and mounting hardware, the receptacle at the back of the cabinet, and the weight on the rails all decide whether a unit that was correct on paper installs in an afternoon. Send the load list, the rack it has to live in and the runtime you need, and we will size it and confirm availability and lead time together.
FAQ
Common questions
- Line-interactive or online double-conversion for a server?
- Online double-conversion for a server, in almost every case. A line-interactive unit corrects voltage and switches to battery when the utility fails, which is fine for switches, access points and workstations; an online design rebuilds the waveform continuously, so the load never sees a transfer at all. Vertiv lists the Liebert GXT5 as a true online double-conversion unit in rack/tower form, which is why that family is the one to look at for servers, storage and sensitive loads, while the Liebert PSI5 and PowerUPS 200 line-interactive units cover closets and desks.
- How do I size a UPS, and how much runtime will I get?
- Add up the real watts of everything that will be plugged in, then choose a unit whose watt rating — not just its VA rating — clears that total with room to grow, because the watt figure is the one that runs out first on modern IT loads. Runtime then falls out of the size: a lightly loaded UPS holds longer than a fully loaded one of the same rating. Decide up front whether you need to ride through brief events or hold the load through a controlled shutdown, and check the extended-battery and shutdown-software options listed for that specific model rather than assuming the whole range offers them.
- Can business, government and education buyers order these?
- Every line Uniqcli quotes is sourced through authorized distribution and screened for TAA country-of-origin and NDAA §889 status before checkout — with documentation tied to the specific part number, not a product family.
