Buying for an organization or for yourself — both work. No payment up front.
Brenthaven sits in the carry half of device protection. Where an always-on shell stays fitted to the chassis and protects the device while it is being used, a sleeve, folio or backpack protects it while it is moving — in a backpack among textbooks, on a cart between rooms, in the trunk of a car on the way home. Both are legitimate purchases. They are not substitutes for each other, and this page is scoped to the carry side on purpose rather than mixing in shells to make the list look deeper.
The line that matters most for schools is Tred: sleeves, folios and backpacks built in an 800D fabric over high-density foam, sized to eleven, thirteen and fifteen-inch devices. Alongside it, Brenthaven builds the Edge folio and Edge 360 range for tablets, the Protect+ rugged tablet line, and a small set of staff-oriented briefcases, totes and backpacks under the Elliott, Metrolite and Collins names. The grid above spans all of them, which is the honest picture of what we hold rather than a curated subset.
Before anything else, the question worth settling is whether a carry case belongs in the program at all. It is the decision that saves or costs the most money across a fleet, and it is usually made by default rather than deliberately.
Buyer's checklist
How to decide on carry cases for a device program
- Answer the shell-versus-bag question first. If the device already wears an always-on shell and lives on campus, a carry item may be redundant. If it goes home in a backpack with books and a water bottle, it is not.
- Size to the device class rather than the exact model. Sleeves and folios are specified by screen size range, which means one part number covers a refresh — a real advantage over model-matched shells.
- Decide who carries what. Students in a take-home program, staff moving between buildings, and technicians moving twenty devices at once all need genuinely different products, and buying one thing for all three is how you end up with three unhappy groups.
- Check the interior dimension against a shelled device. A sleeve cut for a bare eleven-inch Chromebook will not close comfortably around the same device in a rugged case, and forcing it stresses the zip.
- Look at the failure point, which is almost always the zip or the strap attachment rather than the fabric. Ask what the manufacturer's current warranty statement covers and get it in writing on the quote.
- For tablet folios, confirm the stylus or pencil accommodation matches what you issue. A folio that holds the pencil is the difference between a stylus program and a stylus replacement program.
- Consider whether a checkpoint-friendly design matters. It is irrelevant for students and genuinely useful for staff who travel to conferences or between district sites by air.
- Standardize on one or two part numbers per building. Mixed carry inventory makes replacement slow and makes it impossible to tell at a glance whether a student is using a district-issued item.
- Order the replacement stock with the initial order at ten to fifteen percent. Bags are consumables and a second small order later costs more per unit.
Should you issue a carry case at all?
For a fleet that stays on campus and moves between a charging cart and a desk, the honest answer is often no. The device is picked up, carried a few meters, and put down. An always-on shell handles that entirely, and the carry item becomes something students leave in lockers, lose, or use as a lunch bag. Money spent there is money not spent on spares.
For a take-home program, the answer flips. The failure mode changes from 'dropped from desk height' to 'crushed under a textbook', 'soaked in a downpour', or 'wedged into a bag with a set of keys'. A soft sleeve does not stop a fall but it prevents most of that second category, and it is markedly cheaper than the shell it complements rather than replaces.
The middle case — devices that move between buildings during the day — is where a folio or a slim sleeve earns its place, because it keeps a device closed and controlled while a student walks. If you are unsure which case describes your district, look at where your repairs actually come from. A district whose repairs are overwhelmingly screen damage has a use-time problem and needs shells. A district whose repairs are ports, hinges and liquid has a transport problem and needs bags.
The Tred line, and what it is built for
Tred is Brenthaven's education-facing family and the part of the range most relevant to a one-to-one program. The eleven-inch sleeve is listed in an 800D fabric body with a high-density foam interior and a hand grip, sized for notebooks and Chromebooks, and it is the single most useful part number on this page for a district issuing devices to students. It is deliberately simple: one compartment, no organizer panels for students to lose things in, and a grip rather than a shoulder strap.
Above it, the Tred folio adds a shoulder strap and a flat thirteen-inch format for older students who carry a device between rooms all day, and the Tred backpack and Tred Alpha backpack cover the case where the device travels with everything else a student owns. All of them are built around the same protective principle — foam and heavyweight fabric rather than hard structure — which keeps weight down at the cost of not resisting a crushing load.
That is the honest limitation of the whole carry category and it is worth stating in the family handbook. A sleeve protects against abrasion, minor impact and the contents of a backpack. It does not protect a device that has a chair placed on it, and no reasonable amount of foam would.
Tablet folios, rugged cases and staff carry
The Edge folio and Edge 360 lines cover tablet fleets, in polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane constructions with impact-absorbing corners and a fleece-lined interior, sized to specific iPad generations. Protect+ is the more rugged tier, listed with drop, scratch, dirt and water resistance and a shoulder or hand strap for one-handed use — the format that suits a device used standing up rather than at a desk. Several of these hold a stylus, which is the detail worth checking against what your program actually issues.
For staff, Brenthaven's Elliott, Metrolite and Collins lines run from a quilted thirteen-to-fifteen-inch case up to expandable backpacks and totes. These are a different purchase with a different justification and are usually bought in tens rather than hundreds. The relevant criteria change too: comfort over a commute, whether the bag lies flat at an airport checkpoint, and whether it looks appropriate walking into a board meeting.
Because tablet folios are matched to specific device generations, they carry the same model-matching discipline as an always-on shell. Confirm the generation from a device rather than from a purchase record before ordering at volume, and expect to hold more than one part number if your tablet fleet arrived across several refreshes.
Availability, and how to buy this line
This page needs a plain statement about stock. As this guide is written, three of the forty-three photographed, priced Brenthaven lines we hold are in stock: the Tred eleven-inch sleeve, the Edge folio for the 10.2-inch iPad, and the Elliott thirteen-to-fifteen-inch case. The rest of the grid is order-in with a lead time. The grid itself is live and will show you the current position, but plan on the assumption that a volume Brenthaven order is a scheduled purchase.
In practice that means the Tred sleeve is the part number to build a student program around if you need volume soon, and everything else should go through a quote with a firm lead time attached before a requisition is raised. Tell us the deployment date rather than the order date — those are frequently different, and the second one is the one that matters.
If a hard date is at risk, ask about alternatives rather than waiting. There is usually a comparable sleeve or folio in the same size class from another line we carry that is available sooner, and we would rather propose that openly than let a device program launch with no protection at all while a preferred part number sits in transit.
FAQ
Common questions
- Do we need a carry case if our devices already have shells?
- It depends on whether devices go home. For an on-campus fleet moving between a cart and a desk, a shell alone usually covers it and a carry item adds cost without changing the repair numbers. For a take-home program, a sleeve prevents a different class of damage — crushing, liquid, other objects in a backpack — that a shell does not address.
- Will a Brenthaven sleeve fit a Chromebook that already has a rugged case on it?
- Check the interior dimension rather than the screen size. Sleeves are cut to a device class, and an always-on shell adds several millimeters per side, which can be enough that the sleeve closes only under strain. Forcing it stresses the zip, which is the part that fails first. Measure a shelled device and compare it against the listed interior dimension before ordering at volume.
- Which Brenthaven line is designed for students?
- The Tred family — sleeves, folios and backpacks built in an 800D fabric body over high-density foam, sized for eleven, thirteen and fifteen-inch devices. The eleven-inch sleeve is the part number most one-to-one programs standardize on. The Elliott, Metrolite and Collins lines are staff-oriented and bought in much smaller quantities.
- Are these cases sized by model or by screen size?
- The notebook sleeves, folios and backpacks are specified by screen size range, so one part number survives a device refresh. The tablet folios and rugged tablet cases are matched to specific device generations, so those need checking against the actual devices in the fleet before a volume order — confirm from a physical device rather than from a purchase record.
- Most of the range shows as back-ordered. What can we get quickly?
- The grid above is live and is the accurate answer at any moment. As this guide is written, the Tred eleven-inch sleeve is the volume-capable line in stock, with the Edge folio and the Elliott case also available. For anything else, send a quote request with your deployment date and we will come back with real lead times and, where the date is tight, comparable alternatives from other lines we carry.
