About laptop memory
Laptop memory means one physical thing: the SO-DIMM, the small-outline module that notebooks, mini PCs, all-in-ones, many small-form-factor desktops and a large share of network appliances and NAS units take. What it does not mean is one specification. The catalog carries SO-DIMMs across every DDR generation still in service, and they are not interchangeable in any direction — the notch sits in a different place on each, the operating voltage differs, and DDR5 moved voltage regulation onto the module itself. A module from the wrong generation will not seat, and forcing one damages the slot. That is why generation is a filter here rather than something this page decides for you: start from what the system's own service manual or specification sheet says, then narrow.
One check comes before all of that on a recent machine: not every DDR5-era laptop takes a SO-DIMM at all. Thin systems increasingly solder LPDDR5 to the board or use compression-attached CAMM2 modules, and neither is upgradeable with anything on this page. Once the platform is confirmed, three specs decide the purchase. Capacity is a per-slot limit as well as a per-system one — plenty of machines accept two 16 GB modules and refuse a single 32 GB one. Speed is set by the platform, not the module: a system clocks every installed module at the slowest rate the set and the memory controller share, so a faster module beside an existing one buys nothing and matching what is fitted (or replacing both slots together) is the reliable route. Error correction is the third, and most consumer and business laptops neither support nor accept it — the ECC control is there for the mobile workstations, edge servers and storage appliances that do. Specifications on these cards are read from the manufacturer's own product title, so a value the manufacturer did not state is left blank rather than guessed.

- Which memory generation does my laptop take?
- The system's service manual or specification sheet is the only reliable answer, and it is worth reading rather than inferring from the machine's age. SO-DIMM generations are keyed differently — the notch is in a different position on DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 modules — so a module from the wrong generation cannot seat, and no adapter exists. The same document states the maximum capacity per slot and in total, which is the other number you need before filtering. - My laptop has no memory slots — what are my options?
- Then it is soldered or CAMM2, and nothing on this page fits it. Thin and premium notebooks increasingly solder LPDDR5 directly to the board, which makes memory a purchase-time decision rather than an upgrade, and a growing number use compression-attached CAMM2 modules — a different physical standard from the SO-DIMM. The service manual settles which of the three a given model is. If the machine is soldered, the only route to more memory is a different machine, which is worth knowing before ordering modules that cannot be returned as installed.
- What is the difference between a SODIMM and a DIMM?
- Size and pin count. A SO-DIMM (small outline) is roughly half the length of a full-size DIMM and is what laptops, mini PCs, small-form-factor systems and many appliances take; a full-size DIMM is what desktops and servers take. A DDR4 SO-DIMM carries 260 pins against the full-size module's 288, and a DDR5 SO-DIMM carries 262. They are not interchangeable in either direction and no adapter makes them so. If you are buying for a tower or a rack server, the ECC server memory page is the one you want.
- Can I mix modules of different capacities or speeds?
- Usually yes, within limits. Most platforms run a mixed set at the speed and timings of the slowest module, and some lose dual-channel operation when the two slots are not matched — which costs real bandwidth on integrated graphics in particular. If you are upgrading rather than replacing, matching the existing module's capacity and rated speed is the safest route. If you are buying both slots at once, buy them as a matched pair or a kit. Mixing generations is not possible at all: a board takes one.
- Do laptops use ECC memory?
- The great majority do not support it, and an ECC module in a system that does not will either run without the feature or refuse to post. Where it matters is the narrow band of mobile workstations, edge servers, storage appliances and industrial systems whose documentation calls for it — those platforms want ECC SO-DIMMs specifically, and the error-correction control on this page separates the two sets. Confirm the platform supports it before ordering; the feature is a property of the processor and the board, not of the module alone.
