Most 2026 edtech trend lists open with artificial intelligence, immersive learning and personalised pathways. Those are real conversations, but none of them will change a purchase order this fiscal year. What will change one is a set of specific, vendor-published dates and price movements: a Microsoft operating system built for schools reaching end of support in October, a Windows 10 bridge program with its own expiry, a ten-year update clock on Chromebooks that starts before a district ever takes delivery, memory contract prices still climbing, and a funding position that state technology leaders have measured and published. This is that list — every item dated, sourced and attributed, with nothing included that we could not verify.
What this list deliberately leaves out
We have excluded market-size projections, adoption forecasts and any figure whose original source we could not read directly. That removes several claims that circulate widely in edtech trend coverage — projected market values, percentage-of-classrooms adoption rates, and year-over-year shipment swings quoted third-hand without the underlying report. Where we could not verify a number, we wrote the paragraph without one.
What remains is a short list, and that is the point. A district technology plan built on five verifiable facts is more useful than one built on twenty unverifiable ones.

1. Windows 11 SE reaches end of support in October 2026
Microsoft's Windows 11 SE FAQ carries an unambiguous notice: "Support for Windows 11 SE will end in October 2026." The same notice states that Microsoft "will not release a feature update after Windows 11 SE, version 24H2," and that support ending covers software updates, technical assistance and security fixes. Microsoft adds that devices will continue to work, and recommends "transitioning to a device that supports another edition of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security."
Windows 11 SE was Microsoft's cloud-first, locked-down edition built specifically for K-8 one-to-one programs, licensed only on education hardware. Devices running it were bought as a fleet, on a refresh cycle, by districts that chose it precisely because it was simplified and centrally controlled. Those are exactly the fleets that now need a plan with a date on it.
The practical question is not whether the devices keep working — Microsoft says they will — but whether an unpatched student device is acceptable on your network. For most districts the answer is no, which makes this a hardware question. Some SE devices will support a full Windows 11 edition and can be re-imaged; others were specified to SE minimums and will not clear the bar. Inventory by model before you plan, because the split between "re-image" and "replace" is the whole budget difference.
If your SE fleet is large, the sequencing matters more than the total. Re-imaging is a summer-window task with staff time attached; replacement is a procurement cycle with lead times attached. Starting the inventory in the fall budget conversation rather than the spring one is the difference between a planned refresh and an emergency one.
2. Windows 10 already ended — and the bridge has its own expiry
Microsoft's own support documentation records that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, after which technical assistance, feature updates and security updates are no longer provided. That date has passed, but its consequences have not: many district fleets contain Windows 10 machines still in daily use, particularly in labs, libraries, front offices and specialist rooms that sit outside the student-device refresh cycle.
The bridge is the Extended Security Updates program, and the terms a district gets are not the terms a home user gets. Microsoft's consumer ESU program is a one-year extension. For commercial and education organizations — which is what a district buying through volume licensing is — Microsoft documents that enrolled PCs can receive security updates for a maximum of three years past the October 14, 2025 end of support, so October 2028 at the outside. ESU requires eligible devices running Windows 10, version 22H2, and provides only critical and important security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center. Microsoft is equally explicit about what ESU is not: it "does not provide other types of fixes, feature improvements, or product enhancements" and "does not come with technical support." It is purchased a full year at a time with no partial periods, it is cumulative — buying Year Two means paying for Year One as well — and the per-device price doubles each consecutive year.
So the honest framing for a 2026 technology plan is that ESU buys time, not a resolution, at a price designed to rise until replacement is cheaper. A district enrolling now should be enrolling against a written replacement schedule that lands inside that three-year window, not instead of one.
There is a hardware dimension worth naming. Machines that could not move to Windows 11 generally could not because of processor generation or firmware security requirements, not because of memory or storage — which means they cannot be upgraded into compliance. Those are replacements, and they should be counted as such in the same inventory that captures the Windows 11 SE fleet.
3. ChromeOS AUE is a ten-year clock that starts before you buy
Google's Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation states that ChromeOS devices receive updates for ten years from the platform release date. The wording matters: the clock runs from when the hardware platform launched, not from when a district purchased or deployed the device. Two Chromebooks bought on the same day can therefore reach Auto Update Expiration years apart if they are built on different platforms.
Google is direct about what expiry means. After a device receives its final automatic update, its documentation notes that "existing and future policies may not work as intended" and that "technical support will not be provided." The device keeps running; what it loses is patching and manageability, which for a managed student fleet is the part that matters.
The ten-year extension is genuinely good news for districts, and it changed refresh planning in a way many technology plans have not yet caught up with. A five-year update horizon made a four-year refresh cycle self-evident. A ten-year horizon means the binding constraint on a Chromebook's service life is increasingly physical — hinges, keyboards, batteries, screens — and instructional, rather than the update clock.
The operational discipline this demands is simple and frequently skipped: record the AUE date at purchase, per model, in your asset system. Ask for it in writing as part of the quote. A fleet purchased without AUE dates recorded is a fleet that will surprise you, and the surprise arrives in the middle of a testing window.
4. Memory pricing is still the largest single line-item risk
TrendForce, in a release published July 3, 2026, forecast that conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 13–18% quarter-over-quarter in Q3 2026, with NAND Flash contract prices projected to increase 10–15% over the same period. These are contract prices — what device manufacturers pay — which is why the effect shows up downstream in quoted prices for finished hardware rather than as a headline.
For a district, this lands in three places. Device configurations get more expensive at the same specification, so the memory and storage tier you bought last cycle may cost noticeably more this cycle. Quote validity windows get shorter and matter more, because a quote that expires is a quote that reprices. And any purchase deferred into a later quarter carries the risk that the deferral costs more than the delay saves.
The defensive moves are unglamorous and effective. Get quotes with explicit validity dates and accept them inside the window. Consolidate a fiscal year's requirements into one bill of materials rather than trickling requisitions across quarters. And where a configuration decision is genuinely optional — the step up from 8 GB to 16 GB on a device that will serve a keyboarding lab — price both and decide with the number in front of you, because memory tiering is exactly where this cost pressure concentrates.
5. The funding position state leaders have already measured
The 2025 State EdTech Trends Report, published by SETDA with Whiteboard Advisors and drawing on responses from 47 states and the Department of Defense Education Activity, contains the single most useful budget datum in the sector. According to SETDA, only six percent of respondents indicated they have plans in place to continue funding edtech initiatives previously supported with federal stimulus dollars — down sharply from 27 percent in 2024.
The same report records that artificial intelligence ranked as the top state edtech priority for the first time, displacing cybersecurity, which had held the position for two years. Read together, those two findings describe the real 2026 condition: rising ambition against a narrowing funding base.
For a district technology office, the implication is that the case for a hardware refresh now has to be made on operational grounds rather than on program enthusiasm. The three items above — an operating system reaching end of support, a security-update bridge with an expiry date, and devices whose update clocks are recordable — are precisely the kind of evidence that survives a finance committee, because each carries a date and a named source rather than a projection.

6. Displays: panels keep taking the standard classroom, projection keeps the large rooms
We deliberately have no market-share figure to offer here, because we could not verify one to the standard the rest of this piece holds. What we can describe is the shape of what districts are specifying, and why the product characteristics push it that way.
Interactive flat panels win the standard classroom on operational grounds that are verifiable from any product specification: they are self-illuminated and readable with the lights on, they have no lamp or filter on a maintenance schedule, they need no ladder access, they put a presenter at the board without a shadow, and they collapse display, speakers, touch layer and compute into one asset with one warranty. Most now ship with embedded ARM-based compute, with Intel's Open Pluggable Specification slot available where a managed Windows desktop is genuinely required.
Projection keeps the rooms panels cannot serve. Panels top out around 86 to 98 inches at steeply rising prices; a projector produces 100 inches and well beyond. Long-life light sources removed the consumable objection — several ultra short throw models in our catalog carry 20,000-hour normal-mode ratings against the 5,000 hours typical of older lamp units. And in a retrofit, a wall-mounted ultra short throw unit is an installation while a large panel is a project involving an electrician and a low-voltage contractor.

What to do before the next budget cycle closes
